State’s First Female Lieutenant Governor Lucy Baxley Dies at 78

MONTGOMERY—Alabama lost a political icon, a trailblazer and a mother Friday morning.

Former Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley died peacefully at age 78 Friday morning in her Birmingham, Alabama, home surrounded by her family, according to a statement released by her son, Louis Baxley.

Lucy was the State’s first female lieutenant governor and the last Democrat in the Yellowhammer State to hold a statewide elected office. She oversaw the State’s Senate as lieutenant governor from 2003–2007.

Rep. Mike Rogers Still Plans to Vote for Donald Trump

AUBURN—After the latest hot-mic recordings and sexual assault allegations directed at the Republican presidential nominee, Rep. Mike Rogers (R) is still planning to vote for Donald Trump.

“I plan to vote for Donald Trump for president,” Rogers said in a statement on his campaign site. “I have pledged from the beginning to support the Republican presidential nominee even if it was not one of the candidates I initially preferred.”

Petition to Remove Sen. Jeff Sessions from Judiciary Committee Reaches 30K Signatures

A petition launched online to remove Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions (R) from the US Senate Committee on the Judiciary has reached more than 30,000 signatures, following controversial remarks from the senator on Republican Nominee Donald Trump.

At least 32,000 people have signed the petition on UltraViolet.org, according to website administrators. The petition was put online following Session’s refusal to dub Trump’s hot-mic comments, which were published over the weekend by The Washington Post, as sexual assault.

Governor Challenges Subpoena Committee, Turns Over 10,000 Documents

MONTGOMERY—Gov. Robert Bentley’s legal team is putting up a legal fight against the House Judiciary Committee’s investigation into the governor’s possible impeachment.

The Governor’s legal team filed a motion with the Committee Monday objecting to subpoenas issued by the Committee’s legal counsel Jackson Sharman late last month, but only after his office first turned over more than 10,000 pages of documents to Sharman and the impeachment investigators.

Sessions Sticks with Trump, Says His Comments Weren’t About Sexual Assault

MONTGOMERY—Only days after many of Alabama’s Republican Congressional Delegation abandoned Donald Trump after recordings of extremely lewd comments dating back to 2005 surfaced, Alabama’s junior senator, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R), is sticking with his presidential candidate.

“Nobody’s character is perfect,” Session told CBS News. “This is a wrong thing. I do not like this kind of talk and I don’t think most Americans do, but he operates in a world of media and beauty pageants and that kind of thing.”

MONTGOMERY—More Republican members of the Alabama Congressional Delegation are adding on to condemnations against the Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump.

Rep. Bradley Byrne (R), Rep. Martha Roby (R) and Gov. Robert Bentley have abandoned the controversial Republican candidate.

“It is now clear that Donald Trump is not fit to be President of the United States and cannot defeat Hillary Clinton,” Byrne said this afternoon. “I believe he should step aside and allow Governor Pence to lead the Republican ticket.”

Hubbard Files Notice of Appeal on Felony Ethics Conviction

AUBURN — Mike Hubbard is fighting to avoid his four-year sentence in an over-crowded Alabama prison. Hubbard and his attorneys have filed a notice of appeal of his felony ethics conviction, ushering in another trial for the former Alabama House speaker.

Bill Baxley, Hubbard’s lead defense attorney, submitted the appeal with Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re very confident we’re going to prevail, and he’s going to be totally exonerated at the end of the day,” Baxley said.

Bentley Receives Failing Grade On Fiscal Conservatism From CATO Institute

MONTGOMERY—-The Governor’s performance as a fiscal conservative has been graded, and he is taking home a report card with a big fat F.

The right-wing libertarian CATO Institute gave Alabama Governor Robert Bentley an F on his fiscal policy report card for 2016.

CATO ranks every governor in the United States on fiscal policy every other year, giving A’s and B’s to governor’s they deem fiscally conservative and failing grades to governors whom they don’t.

Amid Investigations, Lawsuits, Bentley Appoints New Finance Director

MONTGOMERY—After a Federal audit of the State’s Finance Department, which has yet to be made public, Governor Robert Bentley announced, on Friday, that Clinton Carter, the State’s Deputy Finance Director, will step up to serve as the new State Finance Director.

After serving for nearly three years as the Acting Finance Director under Bentley, Bill Newton will not longer be heading Bentley’s Finance Department. Bentley gave no reason for the shake-up but said he was proud to have Clinton back to assume this role.
