Reaction to Presidential Debate

By Brandon Moseley
Alabama Political Reporter

Wednesday, October 19, 2016, presidential candidates Donald J. Trump and Hillary R. Clinton debated for the last time before the November 8 General Election. A number of state leaders commented on social media about the debate and coming election.

US Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) told Fox News afterwards that Hillary Clinton had a “radical view” of immigration and open borders will make matters even worse if she is elected as president. Sen. Sessions said, “She says nobody should be deported unless they are convicted of a violent crime or terrorism.”

Sen. Sessions said that Hillary Clinton wants to import 65,000 Syrian refugees. “There is no way we can vet those refugees.” Sessions said that as a US Senator and as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did nothing to improve border security and that is why the border patrol union has endorsed Donald Trump. Sen. Sessions said that Clinton’s support for amnesty and a path to citizenship for illegal aliens is not supported by the American people.

Sessions said that Donald Trump also won on repealing Obamacare. Sessions said that the LA Times and Rasmussen polls show Trump with a narrow lead and that the polling data is not as bad as some in the media are making it appear.

Sen. Sessions was the earliest Trump supporter in the US Senate and remains the most vocal.

US Representative Terri Sewell (D-Selma), on the other hand, has been an outspoken Hillary Clinton supporter.

Sewell said, “Debate Night with the Alabama Young Democrats! She was the only candidate in this debate who was presidential! I’m with HER!”

Trump drew headlines when he refused to say that he would accept the election results no matter who won.

State Representative Ed Henry (R-Hartselle) said, “I’m not going to concede. HRC is a lying politician from the bottom of her feet to the top of her head and will do nothing but continue her destruction of our Great Country. I will fight against her even if she manages to steal this election.”

Rep. Henry said that Trump, “Was the only one in the primary that could make a difference. Everyone else was just a politician.”

State Representative Mack Butler (R from Rainbow City) said during the debate, “The nation is getting introduced to Crooked Hillary tonight.”

Former State Senator Hank Irwin (R) said, “My take on the elections: just observations…Trump is now winning. Forget the polls. He now has momentum on his side. The intensity of opposition tells the story. Political rule of thumb: You do not attack #2. You attack only the leader. So…Trump is winning. Now Expect the Democrats to throw everything at him, Mike Pence and YOU over the next three weeks. Prepare for persecution this time…the shame game! Because Hillary and her gang know, if she loses, they are all going to prison.”

The General Election will be November 8, 2016.
