Alabama’s Republican legislators took to Facebook on Thursday to applaud Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard’s (R) from Auburn appointment of Representative Mac McCutcheon (R) from Capshaw to head the powerful House Rules Committee.

The post was previously held by Rep. Blaine Galliher (R) from Rainbow City. Galliher vacated the Chairmanship when he vacated his House seat to join Alabama Governor Robert Bentley’s staff as Legislative Director.

Alabama State Senator Cam Ward (R) from Alabaster said on Facebook, “Congratulations to a good friend and great legislator. Rep. McCutcheon will do a great job as the new House Rules Committee Chairman.”

Sen. Gerald Dial (R) from Lineville said that McCutcheon was, “A good person who will do great job congratulations.”

Rep. Jim Patterson (R) from Meridianville said, “Great news for Huntsville & Madison County: Rep. Mac McCutcheon has been named CHAIRMAN OF (powerful) Rules Committee!!!!! This is a great choice for Huntsville/Madison County’s future. Under Governor Bentley and Speaker Hubbard North Alabama has more power in Montgomery than at any time in History. Only more good can come from this good news.”

Rep. Jay Love (R) from Montgomery said, “I congratulate Rep. Mac McCutcheon for his selection by Speaker Hubbard to be Rules Chairman. Everyone who knows Mac respects him and know he will do a great job in his new role.”

Rep. Jack Williams (R) from Vestavia said, “Mac will do a wonderful job. I am thrilled the Speaker tapped him for this important position. The Speaker is building a very solid leadership team.”

In his written statement to announce the appointment, Speaker Hubbard (R) from Auburn said, “Mac possesses a tireless work ethic and commands the respect and trust of House members on both sides of the aisle, and each of those qualities are vital to the post of Rules Committee chairman. His experience as a legislator, his personal background, and his innate sense of fairness make Mac uniquely qualified to serve in this important and influential post.”

Rep. McCutcheon said, “I appreciate the trust that the Speaker and my House colleagues have placed in me, and I’ll work every day to justify their faith and confidence.  My predecessor set a good example as chairman, and, like him, I’ll encourage the Rules Committee members to give every legislator, regardless of Party or position, equal consideration when deciding which bills will be placed on the agenda. I plan to push for healthy debate and discussion of bills on the House floor.”

McCutcheon was first elected in 2006. He spent 25 years working in law enforcement with the Huntsville Police Department and Court System.
