Joint Legislative Committee will continue investigation into the Alabama State Department of Education

State Senator Gerald Dial (R-Lineville) said on Friday that the Joint Legislative Committee will continue to pursue an investigation regarding the state superintendent hiring process last year.

“We will likely recall some of the same people who have already testified and ask for explanations of differences in their testimony before the Joint Committee and findings in the recent State Department of Education report,” Dial said in a statement. “We will also ask for additional documentation from those who testify.”

Hunter proclaims innocence after report found she conspired against Pouncey

Board of Education Representative Mary Scott Hunter proclaimed her innocence on Wednesday after a report found that she had colluded with four others to discredit State Superintendent Candidate Dr. Craig Pouncey.

Other conspirators include Interim State Superintendent Dr. Philip Cleveland, two attorneys in the Alabama State Education Department, and General Counsel Juliana Dean.

Hunter called the report a “coordinated scheme” that was “cooked up” by some of her colleagues at a Board of Education meeting on Wednesday.

Alabama State Board of Education to hire outside attorney to address Meyer report

The Alabama State Board of Education decided on Wednesday to hire their own legal counsel after a report said a board member conspired to undermine a State Superintendent candidate.

Board Vice-President Yvette Richardson said the board itself is not under investigation but didn’t want to involve itself in the pending litigation against Alabama State Department of Education officials.

The board will hire their own legal counsel only regarding the report made by Michael Meyer, which implicates three department attorneys in a scheme to undermine Dr. Craig Pouncey’s bid for State Superintendent.

US Department of Education: Alabama’s high school graduation rates inaccurate

A new report by the US Department of Education found that the Alabama State Department of Education did not accurately report its high school graduation rate for a period of 4 years.

The report comes from an audit the Federal department conducted looking at the 2013-2014 school year and covered the adjusted cohort graduation rate. This is the rate of people who graduate high school within a 4-year period.

Dial Asks BOE To Postpone Vote On Sentance

MONTGOMERY— On Tuesday, Senator Gerald Dial (R-Lineville) asked the Alabama Board of Education, in an email, to postpone finalizing the hiring of Michael Sentance as Superintendent of Education.

“It has become public that he has had his law license suspended among other concerning issues,” said Dial.

He said that it would be in the best interest of the State not to proceed, in order to allow for more time for an “investigative process” to address some outstanding issues concerning educators and legislators.
