Opinion | Protect the sanctity of marriage from government intrusion

Like most Alabamians, I believe that God established the institution of marriage for the benefit of mankind. Indeed, His purpose was to begin the human family within His bonds of marriage, as a holy union.

Then government stole marriage, for its own purposes.

A classic example is Henry VIII, who established his own church in order to achieve the destruction of his marriage. Henry is not the only example of government overreach into marriage. Throughout history, the government has used marriage as a tool to effect its ends, to protect government power, to maintain control of property and estates, and even to keep a “pure” race. In 2015, the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage at the federal level with the Obergefell v. Hodges decision.

Unrelenting lobbying by various groups helped kill Governor Robert Bentley’s lottery bill SB3, which was carried by Sen. Jim McClendon (R-Springville), namely, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, those backing GreeneTrack, VictoryLand and Alabama Farmers Association (ALFA).

Each group lost something in the last minute mugging of the lottery bill… except ALFA.

Institute Will Promote Job Creation, Clean Reliable Energy

MONTGOMERY—The newly formed Energy Institute of Alabama (EIA) promises to promote reliable, affordable, and clean energy to help grow Alabama’s economy, create high-paying jobs, and build public support for Alabama’s energy industry.

“Our group intends to be a clearinghouse for strong research that will separate political fancy from reasonable policies that benefit the consumer and the industry,” said Alabama Speaker of the House Emeritus Seth Hammett, who has been elected to serve as the organization first chairperson.
