A Montgomery County Circuit Court judge has dismissed two Department of Education attorneys and the former interim state schools superintendent from a lawsuit filed last year by Jefferson County superintendent Craig Pouncey alleging a conspiracy to deny him the superintendent’s job.

Judge Roman Shaul, in a two-page order, released the department’s chief legal counsel, Juliana Dean, fellow ALSDE attorney Susan Crowther and former interim superintendent Philip Cleveland, saying Pouncey’s lawsuit “fails to allege facts that demonstrate these individual defendants were the source of any information that was disseminated to the public and/or that these individuals made any comments about the plaintiff that was not protected.”

Sanderford Cancels Sunset Meeting

July 26, 2016

By Bill Britt

MONTGOMERY—An email to members of the House Sunset Committee acquired by the Alabama Political Reporter states, the meeting scheduled for July 28, was canceled “due to lack of attendance.”

But, that’s just the cover story.

A controversy erupted last week after Republican Committee Chair Howard Sanderford (R-Huntsville) rescheduled a meeting of the committee, which conflicted with the Republican Convention in Cleveland.

Sanderford moved the meeting to July 28, which conflicts with the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia. His action spurred Representative Laura Hall (D-Huntsville), a Democrat on the committee, to call foul, sending an email disclosing she had sent him an earlier message hoping the Committee’s meeting would not conflict with either convention. Hall’s correspondence indicates Sanderford sent a letter to her concerning rescheduling the meeting, which she found offensive: “I have received your letter and the response indicating what may be interpreted in a manner that quite frankly we don’t need in Alabama at this present time,” wrote Hall. She also added, “It is Senator Figures and my hope that you would want to create an environment of cooperation during these turbulent times in Alabama.”

Respect For Republicans But Not For Democrats

MONTGOMERY—A meeting of the House Sunset Committee rescheduled so that its members could attend the Republican Convention in Cleveland this week. However, an email obtained by the Alabama Political Reporter shows that the Committee’s Republican Chairman, Howard Sanderford (R-Huntsville), is not willing to show the same courtesy to Democratic members wishing to attend their convention in Philadelphia next week.

In an email to Sanderford from Rep. Laura Hall (D-Huntsville), she wrote, “The suggested date in your initial correspondence about scheduling, Sunset Committee was for the week of the July, 18, which was during the Republican Convention but was moved to the following week which is the week of the Democratic Convention. I sent Information and dates for both convention with the hope that neither of dates would be used.”

Sessions Says After Brexit Vote: Now its America’s Turn

June 30, 2016

By Brandon Moseley
Alabama Political Reporter

Friday June 24, US Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) applauded voters in Great Britain for voting in a Thursday referendum to leave the troubled European Union (EU) and said that the American people will get to vote similarly against globalism when they vote in November.

Senator Sessions is one of presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump’s closest, earliest, highest profile, and most vocal supporters,

Sessions wrote in a lengthy column: “Just as in the UK, our November presidential election presents a stark contrast. The establishment forces, the global powers, are promoting their values and their interests. They want to erode borders, rapidly open America’s markets to foreign produced goods, while having little interest in advancing America’s ability to sell abroad. These forces have zero interest in better job opportunities and higher wages for our citizens.”
