A positive note in prison debate

The news surrounding the Alabama corrections system seems to be one negative story after another with much of the focus on the need for reform and consolidation in the system as well as higher quality of service and better outcomes.  Much of this is true and is a result of inadequate funding, not because of poor leadership or management.  In fact, we would argue that ADOC has some of the best leadership under Commissioner Jeff Dunn and his team that we have had in some time.  They are tackling the bigger problems and looking for ways to solve them in the face of many challenges.

Governor Bentley Appoints Mike Hill as the Superintendent of the State Banking Department

Friday July 1, 2016, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley (R) announced that he was appointing State Representative Mike Hill (R-Columbiana) as the Superintendent of the State Banking Department.

Representative Hill is replacing John D. Harrison who retired on Thursday after 11 years of service.

Gov. Bentley said in a statement, “I want to thank John for his dedication and commitment to the citizens of Alabama. His leadership in the areas of banking regulation and lending has provided stability to the industry and protected consumers while moving the Department forward.”

Republican Candidates Join Bentley in Columbiana as Election Draws Near

On Saturday, May 31, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley (R) headlined a campaign event in Columbiana.  This small town in Shelby County is where the longtime Tuscaloosa dermatologist grew up.  Bentley was welcomed back by the Columbiana High School band and over 500 enthusiastic supporters and admirers, who gathered in front of the historic Shelby County Courthouse to meet the governor and share a barbecue lunch.

McClendon Explains Redistricting: Expects to Run for State Senate

State Representative Jim McClendon (R) from Springville was in Columbiana speaking about redistricting Thursday to the South Shelby Chamber of Commerce.  Following his presentation Rep. McClendon acknowledged that he intended to run for the 11th District Seat currently held by Jerry Fielding if the reapportionment plan passed by the state legislature is approved by the Department of Justice (DOJ).  Sen. Fielding meanwhile has switched from the Democrat Party to the Republican Party.
