State Rep. Danny Garrett will seek re-election

State Rep. Danny Garrett, R-Tussville, will seek re-election this year.

Garrett filed qualifying papers this week with the Alabama Republican Party to run for another term representing House District 44. Garrett, who was first elected in 2014, currently represents part of Jefferson County including Trussville, Clay and parts of Pinson.

Garrett has served as a member of the influential House Ways and Means education budget committee, which oversees drafting of the Education Trust Fund budget; the Education Policy Committee; the Small Business and Commerce Committee; and the newly created Fiscal Responsibility Committee.

New House committee to tackle waste

There’s a new House committee focused on cutting waste and streamlining the budgeting process.

House Speaker Mac McCutcheon announced the new committee, formally called the Committee on Fiscal Responsibility, at a press conference Tuesday. It will be chaired by Rep. Chris Pringle.

“Its task is to give taxpayers the maximum return on the dollars they send to Montgomery,” McCutcheon said. “(The committee) will search for waste and abuse and find ways to save money.”

Isaac Whorton to seek re-election

Monday, June 5,2017, Alabama State Representative Isaac Whorton (R-Valley) announced that he is running for re-election in the 2018 Republican primary.

Rep. Whorton was elected in 2014, to represent District 38, which includes sections of Chambers and Lee counties.

Rep. Whorton said in a statement, “I have fought for accountability, transparency, and fiscal conservativism in our State government. I am running for re-election because there are still numerous issues that need to be addressed, and because the public needs representatives who are willing to stand up and challenge the status quo, oppose bad Legislation, and support and sponsor good Legislation that would otherwise never see the light of day. I promise to continue to allow the citizens of District 38 to have a voice in the process, and I appreciate the willingness of my constituents to weigh in on matters of importance to this State.”

Rick Santorum was in Alabama on Thursday speaking to supporters of the Alabama Policy Institute (API) at the conservative non-profit’s annual winter meeting.

The conservative Republican is a former Senator from the state of Pennsylvania and was a candidate for the Republican nomination for President in the 2012 Primary season.

Sen. Santorum told the reportedly nearly 1000 gathered API Supporters “We need you to stand up, take responsibility and fight for our beliefs.  Make a difference.”
