Marsh to be featured guest at YR Convention

The Young Republican Federation of Alabama (YRFA) will hold their annual convention in Birmingham on Saturday, May 20. Alabama Senate President Del Marsh (R-Anniston) will join the Young Republicans at a YRFA Social at Regions Field for a Birmingham Barons game.

The YRs said in a statement, “We are so excited to close out the 2017 YRFA Convention with a Barons Game Social! And, we are even more excited to announce that Alabama Senate President Pro Tem will join us as our special featured guest! This year, we will enjoy the game and company of fun YRs from the Luxury Skyboxes (hooray for air conditioning and shelter from the rain!). Baseball ticket, full dinner, and adult beverages included with registration.”

Young Republicans to Hear Presentation on Amendment 2

Thursday, October 13, the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans (GBYR) will hear from UAB professor of biology and past President of Birmingham Mountain Pedalers (BUMP), Dr. Mickie Powell on how Alabama’s Amendment 2 will affect Alabama State Parks.

Dr. Powell wants to make sure the State Parks remain open to the public and are no longer under the threat of closure due to budget manipulations by the State legislature.

Greater Birmingham Young Republicans Declare Shelby ‘Elected Official of the Year’

On Thursday, December 18, the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans (GBYR) held their annual Christmas Party at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in Birmingham’s BJCC complex.  The young Republicans selected Senator Shelby as their ‘Elected Official of the Year.’

The GOP group announced in a statement, “Congratulations to our great friend, Senator Richard Shelby for being awarded ‘Elected Official of the Year’ at our annual Christmas party last night. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the event.”

Phil Williams Speaks to GBYRs

Thursday, November 12, State Representative Phil Williams (R-Huntsville) spoke to the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans (GBYRs) about his effort to be elected by the House membership as the next Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives.

Representative Williams said, “I am here to talk to you about the future because the present is getting on my nerves.”

Williams said that he liked most of the tax plans being presented by the Republican candidates for President in Tuesday’s debate.  Williams predicted that there could be a, “Boom like in the 1980s which was very good for me.”

Phil Williams To Speak to GBYRs

State Representative Phil Williams (R from Huntsville) will speak to the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans on Thursday, November 12th at their monthly meeting at Sidebar in the Lakeview District of Birmingham.

The social begins at 6:00 pm and the formal meeting kicks off at 6:30 pm.

Outgoing Chairman Jackie Curtiss said in a statement, “This month we have a very exciting speaker, Rep. Phil Williams (Madison/Limestone Counties). Rep. Williams, one of Alabama’s leading tax fighters, is seeking to oust Speaker Mike Hubbard from the state house’s top leadership post. He will share with us about his background, what led him to seek the speaker’s position, and his plans for reforming Alabama State House leadership.”

Carrington Addresses GBYRs

Thursday, October 8, Jefferson County Commissioner David Carrington (R) addressed the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans (GBYRs) about how he sees Jefferson County.

Commissioner Carrington said that Jefferson County is the largest county in Alabama in population.  At 660,000 people it is bigger than two states. Jefferson County has a diverse economy.  The news that US Steel’s Fairfield Works was going to shut down its blast furnace was not good news, but we are in better shape to deal with it than we were 20 years ago.

On Wednesday, June 24, the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans will be holding a breakfast with Alabama Republican Party Chair Woman, Terry Lathan. 

Alabama Republican Party Sixth District Chairman Chris Brown said on Facebook, “Remember to join the GBYRs this Wednesday for a special Coffee & Conversation with Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan to discuss the plan to turn Jefferson County RED next November. ALL Jefferson County GOP candidates and grassroots activists should try to attend.”

Hubbard and Strange To Be Featured Guests at YR Convention

The Young Republican Federation of Alabama (YRFA) will hold their annual convention in Birmingham on Friday, May 15th and Saturday, May 16. The Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn) will join the Young Republicans at a YRFA Social at Regions Field for a Birmingham Barons game at 7:00 PM.

Speaker Mike Hubbard and State Senator Cam Ward (R-Alabaster) will join the YRs on Saturday, May 16th at 9:00 AM for a legislative panel.  The Convention includes YRFA Officer elections as well as 2015 Young Republican National Convention delegate selection.

Fridy Briefs GBYRs On Legislative Session

Recently, State Representative Matt Fridy (R-Shelby County) addressed the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans (GBYRs) at their regularly scheduled monthly meeting.

Rep. Fridy said at this point in the session, “A lot of things have been proposed and not a lot has passed.” Fridy said that the process, “Needs to be slow so that we are sure what is passed is good legislation.”

Rep. Fridy said, “One of the things I am very excited about is Charter Schools.” Charters have the potential to really change education in Alabama.  Charters are public schools that can experiments.  They can be open to five and not do homework or they could focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) or fine arts or be open year round.

GBYRs Select Jack Williams Favorite Elected Official

On Thursday, December 18, the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans (GBYRs) met at the Wine Loft in Birmingham for their annual Christmas Party. While feasting, networking, and fellowship were the primary focus of the evening, the GBYRs also voted on their favorite (Republican) elected official of the year by secret ballot.

GBYR Chair Jackie Curtis announced that State Representative Jack Williams (R from Vestavia) was voted as this year’s winner.

Rep. Williams said on Facebook, “Thank you to the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans for selecting me as their 2014 Elected Official of the Year. I am honored by your confidence and continued support.”
