Sewell critical of GOP tax reform effort

U.S. Rep. Terri A. Sewell, D-Selma, was sharply critical of the Republican tax reform package in a recent email to constituents.

“This month, Congress is considering passage of a tax bill that cuts taxes for special interests and the wealthy while eliminating provisions that middle-class families rely on to afford medical expenses, education, their mortgage, and more,” Sewell said. “I fought to fix the tax bill when it came before the Ways and Means Committee, and now I’m fighting to fix it before it passes Congress.”

Shelby says budget passage in Senate first step toward tax reform

Friday, U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., praised the Senate’s passage of a budget resolution.

“Last night’s Senate passage of the budget resolution is a critical step toward pro-growth tax reform,” Shelby said in a statement. “Congress now has the opportunity to advance a comprehensive tax overhaul that will shift the nation’s economic landscape and provide relief to middle-class families. Hard-working Alabamians deserve to keep more of their hard-earned money. Passing this budget puts us one step closer to achieving that goal.”

Obama’s FDA Puts New Demands on America’s Farmers and Ranchers

Wednesday President Barack H. Obama’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that they want meat and poultry producers to stop giving antibiotics to their animals to make them grow faster.

The FDA’s deputy commissioner for foods, Michael Taylor said, “This is a sea change. We’re finally ready to put this issue behind us.” The FDA will give companies three months to declare their intentions “so we know who’s going along with us on this and who isn’t,” and then will begin a 90-day comment period, Taylor says. After that, companies will have three years to implement the changes. If some companies don’t go along, he says, the FDA will “look toward other regulatory options.”

Bentley Says Alabama Economic Development Projects Increased in 2011

Thursday Governor Robert Bentley issued a written statement announcing that new and expanding industry announcement totals rose to the highest capital investment levels in the past four years.

Governor Bentley said.  “Alabama’s economic development programs are working hand-in-hand with local development partners to create new jobs and new opportunities for people in this state.”

The Alabama Department of Commerce (formerly called the Alabama Development Office), announced that during 2011, the number of new jobs increased by 9.3% and capital investment by 87.7% compared to 2010.
