Thursday, U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson has ruled that two Alabama abortion laws are unconstitutional. The ruling blocks the state from enforcing these laws.

Bentley Responds to Abortion Law Ruling

June 29, 2016

By Brandon Moseley
Alabama Political Reporter

Monday, June 27, the United States Supreme Court ruled in “Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt” that a Texas law regulating abortion clinics goes too far. Alabama had a similar law. The Alabama law had already been ruled unconstitutional by Federal Judge Myron Thompson. After Monday’s ruling, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley (R) commented on the decision.

Gov. Bentley said, “I am disappointed to see the US Supreme Court make a political decision in their ruling of the Texas abortion clinic regulation. As a physician, I am concerned about the medical condition of all women, especially when a woman is facing a serious health procedure. In this Texas case, the Supreme Court is making a medical ruling, without any sound medical expertise. Requiring a doctor to have admitting privileges at a local hospital protects the doctor and the patient. In 2013, I signed into law the Women’s Health and Safety Act that requires clinics that provide abortions to meet the same facility standards as ambulatory care centers, which include admitting privileges at local hospitals.”

Friday, September 18 the Republican controlled U.S. House of Representatives voted for H.R. 3134 the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, which would create a moratorium on any funding for Planned Parenthood, as well as H.R. 3504, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which provides greater protection for infants that survive the abortion procedure.

Congressman Gary Palmer (R from Hoover) said in a statement; “The videos by the Center for Medical Progress contain strong evidence that Planned Parenthood is illegally engaged in the sale of body parts from aborted babies.” Palmer said, “These videos provide strong evidence that Planned Parenthood and their affiliates are violating laws aimed at ensuring that every child born alive, including those who survive an abortion procedure, is given all the life saving and life sustaining standard medical care that any other born alive infant would have.  Because of this, I support H.R. 3504, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which would make failure to help a born alive infant a crime.”

On Wednesday, July 30, a third video was released by abortion opponents about allegations of unethical, and possibly, illegal marketing of body parts from aborted fetuses.
