Alabama deserves Roy Moore

Apparently, this needs to be said again: Alabama does not deserve better than Roy Moore.

Back when former Gov. Robert Bentley was first rumored to have misused taxpayer money to facilitate an affair with his top advisor, there was this crazy idea among many around the state that somehow Alabamians deserved better than Robert Bentley.

He was an embarrassment to the state, they said.

He was making us look foolish, they said.

Dear America: An apology for Roy Moore, and all the rest

November 13, 2017

Dear America,

We’re sorry.

I’m speaking for all of us here in Alabama, even if some of these people will never apologize and never believe that they’ve done anything wrong.

The rest of us know better, though.

We know what we’ve done to all of America over the past year, when the Alabamization of this country began. You weren’t ready for it, and I told you last November that no amount of lowering expectations could possibly prepare you for the river of lunacy that was rushing towards you.

There is no bottom for Roy Moore Republicans

November 10, 2017

By Josh Moon

Maybe there is no rock bottom for the Alabama Republican Party.

Maybe it’s just that mushy mud that you find on the bottom of the Tennessee River, and the ALGOP just keeps burrowing deeper and deeper into the muck and filth.

Thursday brought on a new bout of digging, with a familiar face behind the shovel.

Roy Moore. The ever-constant posterboy for what is wrong in Alabama politics.

Ivey declines to endorse Moore

If Roy Moore becomes Alabama’s next U.S. senator, he’ll do it without Gov. Kay Ivey’s endorsement.

Alabama’s Republican Governor on Wednesday declined to officially endorse the Alabama Republican Party’s candidate in a special election that is drawing national attention.

Ivey, one of the nation’s most popular Governors, declined to endorse Moore over his opponent, Democratic nominee Doug Jones, who, polls have shown, is running a very tight race with Moore.

Taxpayers continue to pay Bentley’s legal bills

November 9, 2017

Alabama taxpayers have forked out more than $100,000 over the last 15 months to pay for attorneys defending former Gov. Robert Bentley, one of his former cabinet members and a state employee in a single lawsuit, billing records obtained by APR show.

Much of the money was spent after Bentley and former Alabama Law Enforcement Agency director Stan Stabler were no longer employed by the state.

The Alabama Attorney General’s Office’s investigation into former Gov. Robert Bentley’s administration isn’t over yet.

During a hearing on Monday in the wrongful termination suit filed by former Alabama Law Enforcement Agency secretary, Spencer Collier, attorneys for parties on both sides mentioned that some collection of discovery materials – particularly those involving Bentley’s former top aide, Rebekah Mason – had been delayed by an ongoing criminal investigation.

Roy Moore is on the run

It was all just a show.

I think that deep down most everyone knew this about Roy Moore — that his entire persona was nothing more than a contrived act. A ruse. A way to tweak his ego and bring easy money to his doorstep.

He’s not the tough Christian soldier. He’s not a cowboy. He’s not a pistol-toting, leather vest-wearing warrior.

Attorneys for former Gov. Robert Bentley, his top aide, Rebekah Mason, and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officials asked a Montgomery Circuit Court judge to dismiss a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by former ALEA director Spencer Collier.

After listening to about an hour of arguments from five different attorneys, Judge Greg Griffin said he will rule on the motion by noon Friday.

“I certainly don’t believe it should be dismissed and that we have a strong case,” Collier’s attorney, Kenny Mendelsohn said afterwards. “We’ll have to wait and see, but I feel pretty good about it.”

It’s time to squash America’s irrational love of guns

November 6, 2017

When did it become cool to own a bunch of guns?

This is the thing that has always escaped me in the never-ending gun debate: Just when in the hell did owning a gun make you the macho, cool guy?

For most of my early life, growing up in the South, where pretty much everyone owned a shotgun and rifle for hunting, I didn’t know a soul who owned a bunch of handguns or assault rifles. Oh, our dads and granddads had revolvers that were kept in underwear drawers, with bullets that were stored somewhere in the house.

Republicans stink at governing

November 3, 2017

By Josh Moon

Republicans are the greatest con men on Earth.

I am almost in awe of their skills and abilities to dupe the Republican voters into voting for them. At all. Much less to the point that they control Congress and the White House.

Because every hard statistic says they’re awful at governing.

Seriously, there’s not a single metric available that indicates the GOP’s ideas for governance are successful, particularly in the long term. They are horrible at foreign relations, downright atrocious at infrastructure, loudly wrong about policing and crime prevention and just God awful at unifying.
