Faithful to the Mission

Over the past 24 hours, I have received criticism and “atta boys” for my article “Greene County’s Burden.” Perhaps, I deserve both or neither, but at least people are talking.

Before we published the first page on Alabama Political Reporter, we determined our mission would be to inform, educate and alert our readers to the hard truth about State politics. While I am certain we have fallen short, we have worked hard, and continue to work with great purpose to fulfill that promise.

Ethics Commission Continues To Issue Opinions Contrary To Law

It is almost laughable and tragically so to use the word “ethics” when referring to the commission charged with overseeing the State’s ethics laws. In a recent opinion concerning Rep. Randy Davis (R-Daphne), the ethics commission approved Davis’ request to take a job from a principal with business before the State. This is not the first time this so-called “ethics” commission has issued an opinion that would allow lawmakers to receive “a thing of value” from a principal. The last time it was forced to reverse itself under pressure from the State’s Attorney General and District Attorneys.

If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten. Alabama’s students know far too well how true that statement really is. For decades, we have watched our state’s education system perform at mediocre and far too often, less than mediocre, standards. We have watched year after year as Alabama’s education system has ranked far below acceptable standards. It is time for that to change. It is time for Alabama’s teachers, parents and students to have the kind of top quality educational system that they deserve.
