Stop and think before reposting

Conspiracies both great and small have staked the political landscape since the dawn of human reason. Conspiracy implies a secret agreement between two or more people usually involving some dark intentions.

Reason, in plain speech, is a cause, explanation or justification for an action. As the Oxford Dictionary explains, “The power of the mind to think, understand, and form judgments logically.” However, to assume that individuals exercise good judgement in all situations is as silly as subscribing a grand scheme to every collaborative effort.

House Ways & Means Committee Passes Tax Increases

Tuesday, September 9, the Alabama House Ways & Means Committee met to consider a controversial series of revenue measures in an attempt to pass a State General Fund (SGF) budget.

Republicans passed a number of revenue bills in rapid fire fashion over the objections of House Democrats.

State Representative Christopher John England (D-Tuscaloosa) said on Facebook, “House General Fund Committee has passed bills raising taxes on cigarettes, businesses, car titles, and car rentals and porn. That’s right, porn…They are now headed to the House for debate and possible final passage as early as tomorrow.”

House to Consider Excise Taxes on Sexually Explicit Businesses

On Wednesday, September 9, the House Ways & Means General Fund Committee voted to give a favorable report to House Bill 17, sponsored by Rep. Jack Williams (R-Vestavia).  HB17 would levy an excise tax on the receipts from the sale of sexually-oriented materials and certain charges related to sexually-explicit businesses.

The purpose of the Second Special Session is to raise growth revenues for the troubled state general fund (SGF); and this proposal by Rep. Williams was one suggestion that passed the General Fund Committee on Wednesday.
