First arrests made in Birmingham Water Works Board probe

The chairwoman of the scandal-plagued Birmingham Water Works Board and two others were arrested Wednesday on felony ethics charges.

BWW chairwoman Sherry Lewis was indicted by a special grand jury earlier this week on charges of misusing her office for personal gain, or the gain of a family member, voting on matters in which she had a personal interest and soliciting or accepting anything for the purpose of corruptly influencing official action.

Federal Grand Jury probe may focus on EPA Superfund, BCA involvement

The presence of a Federal Grand Jury meeting at the Vance Federal Building in Birmingham was revealed through tweets from al.com’s John Archibald and Kyle Whitmire. The duo also stated on Twitter that State Sen. J.T. “Jabo” Waggoner (R-Vestavia Hills) testified before the panel for around two hours. While the nature of the Federal probe isn’t clear, it is believed to have some connection to the Birmingham Water Works, the 35th Avenue Superfund site, and other Federal grant money flowing into the Magic City and surrounding county. There is also a focus on the Business Council of Alabama’s (BCA) role in a joint resolutions opposing the Superfund site.

New Developments in Bentley Investigation

MONTGOMERY—The investigation into Governor Robert Bentley has taken a new turn, with the recusal of US Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama, George Beck. Those with knowledge of the investigation believe that Beck’s recusal is due to his long association with donors, consultants, and advisors, who have been been involved in various capacities with the Bentley administration.

While much of the probe into allegations against Bentley has been under the FBI’s Public Integrity Section (PIN), ultimate oversight has now been given to John A. Horn the US Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. PIN oversees the federal effort to combat corruption by prosecuting elected and appointed public officials at all levels of government.

Sen. Williams Attacks Media Over Reporting Law Enforcement Probe

Republican State Senator Phil Williams (R-Rainbow City) issued a scathing press release blaming this publication for his being under investigation by State law enforcement, saying “Britt has attacked my law firm and its clients and insinuated I have used my position as a senator for private gain.”

His press release also stated “A full inquiry by the Senator at all levels of government and law enforcement, has revealed no evidence of any investigation, whatsoever.”
