At least it seemed for a moment that the cancer eating away at Alabama’s state government was in remission.

The rise of Gov. Kay Ivey and Speaker Mac McCutcheon after the removal of Gov. Robert Bentley and Speaker Mike Hubbard appeared to herald a new day in state politics. But in the State House, bills are offered that would reintroduce the same type of mischief that poisoned the system when Hubbard and Bentley were in office.

McClendon, Harper to Unveil Lottery Plan Today

On Tuesday, January 12, at 10:00 a.m., Senator Jim McClendon (R-Springville) and Representative Alan Harper (R-Northport) will hold a press conference to announce their legislation to allow the people of Alabama to vote on whether or not the State will hold a lottery. The duo announced in a statement that the proposed legislation will be introduced in the 2016 Regular Session of the Alabama Legislature that starts on February 2.

Freshman Senator Plans to Kill Lottery

A new legislative session is approaching and as usual the lottery supporters are out making lottery proposals which normally go nowhere.

On Thursday, January 7 Senator Shay Shelnutt (R-Trussville) speaking to the Republican Women of Trussville predicted that the Alabama legislature will not pass a lottery or a gambling bill again this year.

Senator Shelnutt said, “I am against it right now in theory but I have to see.” “There is plenty of money we just have to spend it better.”
