The Judge Roy Moore for Senate campaign had been rocked by sudden accusations of unethical conduct by Moore 38 years ago as a single deputy district attorney in Etowah County.  Powerful Washington powerbrokers, led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., were demanding that the Alabama Republican Party Steering Committee decertify Moore as the Republican candidate in the coming special election.  The fate of the campaign hung in the hands of 21 Alabama Republican leaders; when Chairman Terry Lathan and the steering committee voted to defy the Establishment and embrace Moore.

Alabama Young Republicans pull support from Moore

The Young Republican Federation of Alabama is pulling its support of Senate hopeful Roy Moore even as the state party and most of its leadership, including the Governor, are sticking by the embattled candidate.

The Young Republican Federation of Alabama Steering Committee, the executive committee which represents young Republicans ages 18-40, voted Saturday to pull all support from Moore. The group called on him to withdraw unless he can “clearly and convincingly refute the allegations against him.”

Young Republican Federation of Alabama divided in decision to suspend support for Roy Moore

Saturday, November 18, 2017, the Young Republican Federation of Alabama (YRFA) Steering Committee passed a resolution suspending their support for Roy Moore’s candidacy for the United States Senate by a supermajority vote. The resolution also calls for Roy Moore to step aside as the Republican nominee if he is unable or unwilling to clearly and convincingly refute the allegations against him.

“The YRFA is a diverse organization with clubs all over the state of Alabama,” said YRFA Chairman Jackie Curtiss. “We understand, respect, and appreciate that there are varying opinions on this issue within our Federation. We also encourage and welcome individual clubs to speak out on this issue according to the conscience of their membership.”

The ALGOP Steering Committee votes to continue supporting Roy Moore

After a week of speculation, the Alabama Republican Party Steering Committee reaffirmed its support for U.S. Senate nominee Roy Moore.

Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan said in a statement regarding the U.S. Senate election: “On Wednesday evening, the Alabama Republican Party Steering Committee, comprised of 21 members, met to discuss the events and circumstances regarding the December 12 U.S. Senate race.  The ALGOP Steering Committee supports Judge Roy Moore as our nominee and trusts the voters as they make the ultimate decision in this crucial race.”

GOP Steering Committee flees meeting without announcing a decision about Moore

The Alabama Republican Party’s Steering Committee met for three hours in a closed meeting Wednesday night at the Embassy Suites Hotel to decide the fate of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore, who has been deluged by national criticism after allegations of misconduct in the late 1970s were first published by the Washington Post.

The 21 member ALGOP steering committee slipped out of the building in the night without addressing the gathered media or releasing a statement.  Reportedly the Alabama Republican Party Steering Committee did not decertify Roy Moore as the Republican nominee.  Reportedly the Alabama Republican Party remains behind Roy Moore…for now.

The Republican Party Establishment in Washington has challenged Roy Moore to prove that he is not a sexual predator after five women have come forward saying that they had inappropriate contacts with Moore in the late 1970s.

Moore grew up in rural Gallant, Alabama.  He went to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.  Moore served as a Captain of a military police company in the Vietnam War.  After his discharge from service, Moore went to the University of Alabama School of Law in Tuscaloosa.

On Tuesday night, the 5th Congressional District Republican Executive Committee unanimously adopted a Resolution in support of Roy Moore as the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate.

The 5th Congressional District Republican Executive Committee asks the ALGOP Steering Committee to affirm their support of Judge Moore as the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate.

The 5th Congressional District Republican Executive Committee represents Jackson, Limestone, Lauderdale, Madison, and Morgan counties and meets quarterly at Old Greenbrier Restaurant.

Today, the Alabama Republican Steering Committee will meet to decide the fate of Roy Moore’s campaign for U.S. Senate.

Conservatives are urging the 21-member committee to announce that they are backing the Republican nominee, Roy Moore, despite allegations from multiple women, first reported by the Washington Post, that Moore acted inappropriately with them during the late 1970s.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and the powerful Washington Republican establishment are urging the committee to de-certify Moore as the Alabama Republican Party candidate and to free Republican officeholders and candidates to support a write-in candidate that is more acceptable to Senate leaders and would be less divisive.

Shelby County Republican Executive Committee votes unanimously to support Judge Roy Moore

Loyalty Pledge Impediment to Electing Honest Speaker

MONTGOMERY—At the urging of then Speaker of the House, Mike Hubbard, in 2014 the Steering Committee of the Alabama Republican Party added a loyalty oath to the qualifying packets given to each candidate running for office under the GOP banner. The pledge was added according to a steering committee members after the qualifying rules had been approved. Hubbard, who was then under indictment on 23 felony counts of public corruption, wanted to ensure that House Republicans would reelect him as Speaker, and the fealty clause was a means to that end.
