Bipartisan bill would give retirees a one-time bonus

Some Republicans in the Senate and at least one Democrat in the State House of Representatives believe certain retired educators should receive a one-time, lump sum payment.

Republican Senator Gerald Dial, who is leading the charge, is joined by Senate colleagues Jimmy Holley, Jim McClendon, Steve Livingston, Tom Whatley and Cam Ward to sponsor SB3. In the House, Rep. Craig Ford is carrying an identical bill that will provide a one-time payment for former educators and beneficiaries who receive retirement benefits from the Teachers’ Retirement Systems (TRS). BIRMINGHAM—On Tuesday, November 4, 2014, four years of careful planning by Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh (R from Anniston) and the Alabama Republican Party ended with a late night celebration as the GOP not only defended their Super Majority against fierce coordinated attacks by desperate Democratic Party challengers, but actually added Senate seats.

Alabama voters gave Republicans control of both Houses of the Alabama Legislature for the first time in the election of 2010.  Not just control, but super majority control.  Alabama Democrats have spent the last four years planning to take back control and they got their chance on Tuesday, November 4.

Livingston Qualifies For Alabama Senate

Businessman Steve Livingston has qualified as a Republican candidate for the Alabama Senate in District 8.

Livingston said in a prepared statement, ìI am excited to be an official candidate.  I am not a career politician.  I am a first time candidate and I have been a successful small businessman for over 30 years.  I will bring small business values to the legislature.  Government should live within its means and I will fight any new taxes on our hard working families.”
