Statewide major party candidates field is set as qualifying closes

Major Party qualifying ended on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, and there were some late additions, including in the governor’s race.

State Senator Slade Blackwell, R-Mountain Brook, is running as a Republican for governor.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has qualified for her own term in the office of governor. She was elevated from lieutenant governor to the position last April when Governor Robert Bentley resigned.

In addition to Ivey and Blackwell, evangelist Scott Dawson, state Senator Bill Hightower, R-Mobile, Michael McAllister and Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle are all running in the Republican primary.

Qualified statewide candidates

A host of candidates have qualified for the state’s constitutional offices.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has qualified for her own term in the office of governor. She was elevated from lieutenant governor to the position last April when Gov. Robert Bentley resigned.

AG Commissioner John McMillan to run for treasurer instead of governor

Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries John McMillan is running for state treasurer, he told the Alabama Political Reporter.

APR phoned John McMillan because his campaign end of year report still showed him having $53,144 in cash on hand at the end of 2017, and the report had him still in the governor’s race.

Commissioner McMillan confirmed that he is no longer interested in running for governor. McMillan said that on Wednesday he moved that campaign finance money over to his campaign for state treasurer. McMillan told APR that he would qualify for treasurer on Tuesday’s major party campaign qualifying and will release a more detailed statement at that time.

Jefferson County Young Democrats Endorse Hillary Clinton

On Wednesday, January 13, 2016, the Jefferson County Young Democrats (JCYD) Political Action Committee released its endorsements for the March 1, 2016 Democratic Primary Election.

Jefferson County Young Democrats President Le’Darius Hilliard said in a statement, “The Jefferson County Young Democrats are proud to endorse a slate of qualified candidates for elected office. After a through screening process, we are confident that this group of incumbent elected officials and candidates for office are committed to serving the people of Jefferson County and young people in particular. The Jefferson County Young Democrats will work diligently to register and educate voters as well as turn out Democrats to the polls on March 1, 2016.”

Wheeler Elected ALGOP Treasurer

On February 21, the Alabama Republican Party State Executive Committee met to vote on new leadership and elected former Alabama Power executive David Wheeler as the new Alabama Republican Party Treasurer.

Following his election, David Wheeler said in a statement on Facebook, “I am humbled by the trust that has been bestowed on me. Thanks to everyone who supported my campaign. I look forward to working with the new Steering Committee including Terry M. Lathan, Lynn Mitchell Robinson, Chris Brown Clayton Mark Turner, Vicki Ann Drummond, Pat McCain Wilson, and the other newly elected members.”

Wheeler Announces Candidacy For ALGOP Treasurer

On February 21, the Alabama Republican Party Executive Committee will meet to vote for new leadership.  While Chairman is the most publicly interactive position, there are a number of other important positions being voted upon as well.  Former Alabama Power executive David Wheeler has announced that he is running for ALGOP Treasurer.

David Wheeler said in a written statement, “After much thought and prayer, I want you to be the first to know that I will be a candidate for the position of Alabama Republican Party Treasurer. As a conservative Republican, and longtime Party activist, we need to ensure that the election gains over the past are extended, not relented, and that will only happen with real leadership, oversight, and transparency.”

Cooke Running For ALGOP Treasurer

On Tuesday December 16, 2014, Sumiton businessman and minister, Stan Cooke announced that he was seeking the office of Treasurer of the Republican Party. Cooke is a former candidate for Lieutenant Governor and for Congress.

Stan Cooke wrote in a statement, “Dear Members of the Alabama Republican Party, Today I formerly declare that I am a candidate for the office of Treasurer of the Alabama Republican Party.”
