A change in Alabama

This changes things.

Oh, don’t think that I’m going to launch into some sappy love-fest over Doug Jones’ victory Tuesday night. (And it was a victory. Not even Bob Riley and Billy Canary could dig up 20,000-plus votes to save Roy Moore.)

Jones’ victory alone doesn’t deserve a love-fest. The people of Alabama did what they should have done — prevented an awful candidate from becoming their U.S. Senator. You don’t get a cookie for doing the things you’re supposed to do. But you can be proud of doing the right thing, and I am proud of the results.

A recent issue of “The Business Advocate,” a publication which is a part of the Business Council of Alabama, features a full-page photo of Chairman Billy Canary with a headline proclaiming, “Business Council Governmental Affairs Conference Best Ever.” The commanding picture with its fraudulent headline is an example of how a once important business organization has been co-opted for personal gain.

Canary has gained considerable wealth and power as BCA’s chieftain, but today, he finds himself under fire.

Bentley’s “Great Victory” Cause For Worry, Warning, Broken Promises

MONTGOMERY—Shortly after passage of legislation to raid BP settlement funds to cover Medicaid funding, Governor Robert Bentley, who has largely been absent from the process, praised it as a bipartisan “victory.”

Obviously, the Governor failed to hear the Democrat’s pleading for more Medicaid funding and to expand its availability under the Affordable Care Act.

Alabama Arise State Coordinator, Kimble Forrister, sees a different victory: “Expanding Medicaid would be a victory for Alabama’s economy, budgets and families.” He praised the bill’s passage, but echoed the concerns expressed by both Republican’s and Democrats: “Still, the bottom line is that we got yet another temporary solution. Vulnerable Alabamians’ access to health care shouldn’t be left up to stopgaps or one-time money.”

God Speed Speaker McCutcheon

The nomination of Representative Mac McCutcheon by the Republican Caucus assures that he will be the next Speaker of the House. We, at the Alabama Political Reporter, congratulate him and wish him great success in his new leadership role.

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything,” wrote Irish playwright and great thinker, George Bernard Shaw.

I have been a fierce critic of Rep. McCutcheon since he appeared at the pep rally with Mike Hubbard following Hubbard’s indictment, and I expressed outrage when he tried to pass the Star Chamber bill last session. However, recently, he and I have had an opportunity to discuss several issues of importance to both the State and its people. His forthrightness, willingness to listen and desire to represent all of the people has given me hope and confidence in his leadership. We both agree on the need for change, change that must lead to a better State and Legislature.
