More county elected officials join the Republican Party

The 2018 elections are approaching and more Alabama elected officials are becoming members of the Republican Party.

Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan made a statement welcoming the new ALGOP elected officials:

“Today, because of our strong county Republican parties, the ALGOP is thriving,” Lathan Said. “Now, 60 percent of all partisan elected officials in Alabama are Republican. With our steadfast conservative supporters, we can truly say we have a successful and well-equipped team. Our roots are deep and our message is clear as we prepare for the 2018 Alabama Primary Elections. Adding these valuable new members only helps to strengthen and grow our party.”

The Jeff Sessions I know

In his March 30, 2017 piece about Jeff Sessions, Mr. Kennedy called Attorney General Sessions a litany of names: a racist, xenophobic, homophobic, and “apparently a liar.” Let’s take these one by one.

First, the “racist” label is hard to square with the endorsements from a number of African Americans, like former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former chairman of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission Gerald Reynolds, Alabama State Senator Quinton Ross, Alabama County Commissioner Albert Turner, Jr., and Executive Director of the Center for Rural Enterprise, Catherine Flowers. More importantly, unlike Mr. Kennedy, African Americans who have actually worked with Jeff Sessions and known him for decades, like former federal prosecutor Willie Huntley and former Federal Marshal Jesse Soroyer, and his former chief counsel on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, me, testified in support of Jeff Sessions because we know the man and he is not a racist. His love for his Chinese American son-in-law and granddaughters also debunks that label.

Palmer Announces More Staff

On Thursday, December 18, Congressman-elect Palmer announced the hiring of his District Director, Field Director and Constituent Service Liaison.

Palmer announced that former Birmingham Post Herald sports writer Ray Melick will join Gary’s District. Melick was a long-time sportswriter, as the Alabama beat writer and later lead sports columnist for the Birmingham Post-Herald, radio personality, and had a weekly TV sports show before joining the Birmingham News as sports columnist in 2003.

Palmer Announces More Staff

On Thursday, December 18, Congressman-elect Palmer announced the hiring of his District Director, Field Director and Constituent Service Liaison.

Palmer announced that former Birmingham Post-Herald lead sports columnist, radio and television personality, Ray Melick will join as District Director. Melick has spent 27 years writing and talking about sports in Birmingham.

Melick left Birmingham media in 2010 to be the Director of Communication for BP’s Gulf Coast Restoration Organization in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon incident. Since 2013, Melick has been the Public Affairs Manager for Georgia-Pacific in Mississippi. Melick and his wife, Mary Grace, have three children and live in Vestavia. They are members of Mountain Brook Community Church, where Melick has been an Elder and Community Group leader.
