On Friday, November 18, 2016, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley (R) congratulated US Senator Jeff Sessions (R) on his appointment to a cabinet position with the Trump Administration as the next US Attorney General.

Governor Bentley said, “I wish to congratulate Senator Sessions on his appointment as United States Attorney General. I look forward to having conservative leadership in our Justice Department. Alabama enjoys strong representation in Congress and I want to ensure that continues upon the confirmation of Senator Sessions. He has served our state and our people with dignity and has been a bright example for conservative values.”

Gov. Bentley promised, “I will choose an appointee who shares those values and will work to further the agenda of President-Elect Trump, all while keeping Alabama first in his or her mind. This person must uphold the Constitution, value the rights of the Second Amendment, the rights of the states, support pro-life issues, implement a strong national security policy and support domestic job creation. I have spoken with Senator Sessions’ several times this week. We both agree that this is a remarkable time in our state’s history. I have already spoken today with ALGOP chairwoman Terry Lathan and told her that I will be asking members of the executive committee to submit names of those they feel are most qualified to serve as U.S. Senator. In the near future, I look forward to personally considering qualified candidates.”

The Alabama Republican Party State Executive Committee consists of over 500 Republican Party leaders from across the state and includes people from all 67 Alabama counties.

Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan was effusive in her praise of the decision by President-elect Donald J. Trump (R). Lathan said, “The Alabama Republican Party is elated to see Senator Sessions nominated by President-elect Donald Trump for US Attorney General. Senator Sessions has been a consistent conservative voice for Alabama, and while we will miss his principled leadership in the halls of Congress, we are proud to share him with our nation.”

Lathan said, “As a former US Attorney and Attorney General for Alabama, Senator Sessions is well qualified for this position. There is no doubt in our minds that Senator Sessions will excel in this new role. In Alabama, we are very aware of Senator Sessions’ unwavering conservative record. Therefore, we know his experience in this new administration will be valuable to President-elect Trump and to America.”

“Senator Sessions is a rock-solid conservative who has been a strong supporter of the Republican Party since his college years. A Party stalwart who consistently keeps America’s best interests at heart, Senator Sessions will serve America well in the Department of Justice.”

Lathan concluded, “With Senator Sessions, it has always been ‘Country First’. He is a true patriot who simply loves America. These are the qualities of leaders that America expects and deserves. We take great comfort knowing that our nation is in good hands with Jeff Sessions serving in this new capacity. We lift up our prayers for Senator Sessions and his family as he leads our country alongside President-elect Trump.”

On Saturday, Sen. Sessions accepted President-elect Trump’s appointment to head the US Justice Department.

Trump has also appointed Retired Army Lieutenant General Michael Flynn as national security adviser, US Representative Mike Pompeo (R-Kansas) as the new director of the CIA, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus to by Whitehouse Chief of Staff, and former Breitbart News head Steve Bannon to be Senior Counsel and Chief Strategist of the West Wing.

Trump upset many of his critics in the media on Friday when his daughter, Ivanka Trump (who is expected to take over his duties as head of the Trump companies) sat in on his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The media was not allowed to attend and no transcript of the meeting has been shared by the Trump Transition team. Trump has been having meetings over the weekend with possible nominees.
