Bentley’s mandatory Cabinet meeting, “Just keeping the team together”

A mandatory cabinet meeting called by Gov. Robert Bentley sent the chattering class into a frenzied fit of speculation earlier today. The meeting which took place around 1:00 p.m. was not a crisis meeting but one where Bentley assured his closest allies that he was feeling well and wanted to keeping fight for his agenda.

According to those with knowledge of the meeting, Bentley reminded his cabinet that there was a lot that needed to be accomplish over the next two years and that he expected his cabinet members to move toward without hesitation.

Bentley’s recent health scare, along with a pending Ethics Commission report that may find wrong doing on his part, resulted in widespread conjecture about the meeting. Rumors from “He will be stepping down for health reason’s (wink, wink),” to “He’s cut a deal with the prosecution,” were part of the day’s Goat Hill gossip.

“It is not unusual for a cabinet meeting to be mandatory,” said a Bentley staffer. “The Governor calls mandatory meeting when he has something specific on his mind.” In this case, Bentley wanted to assure his Cabinet that he was feeling good and was not giving up, several attendees reported. “We’ve been worried about the Governor’s health and with all the mess that’s going on it was good to see he is not going to quit,” said another attendee. “He looked good and sound positive,” said a loyalist. “The Governor just wanted to see us and for us to see him pretty simple, just keeping the team together.”
