Brooks to announce he is running for Senate

On Sunday, May 14, 2017, US Representative Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) is expected to announce that he is running for the US Senate seat currently held by Sen. Luther Strange (R).

Congressman Brooks, a Freedom Caucus member, is one of the most conservative members of the US House of Representatives.

Brooks has scheduled a series of media events across the State today, including an event at Alabama Republican Party Headquarters, where he is expected to sign his qualification papers for Senate.

Rep. Brooks is currently serving his fourth term in the US House of Representatives.

Brooks previously served in the Alabama House of Representatives for three terms. When he was elected in 1982, Brooks was the only Republican member of the House north of Birmingham. Brooks also has been Madison County District Attorney, Madison County Commissioner, a law clerk, and Tuscaloosa County Assistant DA.

Rep. Brooks graduated from Grissom High School in 1972. He graduated from Duke University with a double major in political science and economics. In 1978, he graduated from the University of Alabama Law School.

Congressman Brooks serves on the Armed Services; Science, Space, and Technology; and Foreign Affairs Committees.

Mo Brooks is married to Martha Jenkins of Toledo. Martha is a retired CPA and a former middle school teach. Mo and Martha have four children and eight grandchildren.

Sen. Luther Strange has announced that he is running for the office that former Governor Robert Bentley (R) appointed him to when Senator Jeff Sessions (R) was confirmed as US Attorney General by the Senate. Strange was twice elected as Alabama Attorney General.

Also running as Republicans are former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, State Representative Ed Henry (R-Hartselle), and former Alabama Christian Coalition President Randy Brinson.

Former US Attorney Doug Jones, marijuana legalization activist Ron Crumpton, and Robert Kennedy Jr. of Mobile have all announced their candidacies for US Senate as Democrats.

On Friday we confirmed that the Robert Kennedy who is running for Senate is not Bamacarry co-founder Robert W. Kennedy Jr.

To this point, The Alabama Political Reporter has not been contacted by Senate candidate Kennedy or by his campaign.

Randy Brinson will also be signing his qualification papers for the Senate race at Alabama Republican Party headquarters on Monday.

Wednesday, May 17 is the last day that a candidate can qualify as a major party candidate for the Senate race.
