Congressman Bradley Byrne applauds airport grants

Congressman Bradley Byrne, who represents Alabama’s 1st Congressional District, thanked the U.S. Department of Transportation and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao on Monday for eight grants from the federal Department of Transportation to local airports in Southwest Alabama.

“Having a well-maintained and quality airport is critical in terms of economic development and helping bring new jobs to our region,” Rep. Byrne said in a statement. “I appreciate the Department of Transportation and Secretary Elaine Chao for their investment and support of Alabama’s airports. These grants will be put to good use to help improve our infrastructure in Southwest Alabama.”

The grants awarded by the Department of Transportation to Byrne’s district include:

  • The Atmore Municipal Airport was awarded $72,000 to construct a fuel farm and Update Airport Master Plan Study.
  • The Bay Minette Municipal Airport was awarded $45,000 to update their Airport Master Plan Study, and $55,000 to remove obstructions.
  • The Jack Edwards National Airport in Gulf Shores was awarded $150,000 for runway safety improvements.
  • The Monroe County Aeroplex was awarded $506,105 to rehabilitate the runway.
  • The Jeremiah Denton airport on Dauphin Island was awarded $149,400 to rehabilitate the runway.
  • The Foley Municipal Airport was awarded $259,149 to construct a taxiway.
  • The Mobile Regional Airport was awarded $1.1 million to improve airport drainage, acquire friction measuring equipment, and update airport mast.
  • The Brewton Municipal Airport was awarded $300,000 to rehabilitate runway lighting.

Monday Congressman Bradley Byrne kicked off his twelve stop “Better Off Now” town hall tour with the first tour stop in the Salipta community in Clarke County.

Byrne said on social media: “Great crowd for our first town hall meeting on the #BetterOffNow Town Hall Tour in Clarke County. Topics ranged from opioids to infrastructure to VA issues to Red Snapper to rural healthcare. Thanks to the Salipta Volunteer Fire Department for hosting today’s meeting!”

Congressman Byrne is holding public town halls in each of the counties that make up Alabama’s First Congressional District. Byrne said that he will discuss how the American people are better off now thanks to a booming economy, stronger military, and safer communities.

Byrne ranks among the top of all Members of Congress for the number of town hall meetings held. Since assuming office in late 2013, Byrne has held over 100 town hall meetings, including meetings over the phone and through Facebook.

  • Citronelle on Thursday, August 2nd at 3:00 p.m. CT at the Citronelle High School 8200 Lebaron Avenue; Citronelle, AL.
