Shooting leaves one dead, four injured near Auburn University campus

STOCK

A shooting early Sunday morning left one dead and four others, including one Auburn student, injured at a fast-food restaurant near Auburn University’s campus.

Police said Sunday that gunfire erupted outside a McDonald’s on  West Magnolia Avenue in Auburn. The McDonald’s is just a block from Toomer’s Corner and serves as a go-to watering hole near the city’s downtown bar scene.

Police responded to the shots at about 2:24 a.m. Sunday morning. When they arrived, they found one man — 20-year-old Evan Mikale Wilson of Tuskegee — dead.

Four others, who have not been named, were injured.

A 17-year-old male from Opelika, a 19-year-old female from Opelika and a 21-year-old male Auburn student from Hilton Head, South Carolina, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by ambulance to East Alabama Medical Center a few miles away in Opelika.

A 16-year-old from Opelika had to be airlifted by helicopter to Piedmont Midtown Regional Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia, with serious injuries.

Wilson’s body will be taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences State Medical Examiner’s Office in Montgomery for a postmortem exam, police said.

Lee County Chief Deputy Coroner Gene Manning pronounced him dead at the scene.

One suspect, a 17-year-old male from Opelika, has been charged with murder. Authorities haven’t named him because he’s a juvenile, though they plan to charge him as an adult.

The case remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.

The suspect is being held on a $150,000 bond at the Lee County Jail.
