Doug Jones campaigns for Mallory Hagan

Former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones.

U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-Alabama) endorsed Mallory Hagan and joined Hagan at an Auburn tailgate event Saturday during the Texas A&M football game. Hagan is running for Congress in House District 3.
The Auburn University tailgate on Saturday was for the Hagan team’s get out the vote efforts.

“We have to get out the vote on November 6th and send Mallory to Congress,” Jones said in a statement. “She is working on all the kitchen table issues that sent me to the US Senate education, healthcare, workforce development. We need to get her voice in the 3rd Congressional district, and you can do it on November 6th.”

“It’s wonderful to have the support of Senator Doug Jones in this race,” Hagan said. He has been a friend and wonderful source of advice during this campaign. We are hoping to have record voter turnout at the polls on Tuesday, and because of Senator Jones’ race last year, we also have the enthusiasm to win.” said Mallory Hagan. “We will be working hard until 7 pm on Tuesday night to make sure every single person gets to the polls and can voice their opinion.”

Doug Jones was a former U.S. Attorney during the Clinton Administration. He was in private practice until running for U.S. Senate last year in a special election. Jones defeated former Chief Justice Roy Moore (R). Jones is finishing the remainder of popular Senator Jeff Sessions (R) term and will face re-election in 2020.

Mallory Hagan is 29 years old. She grew up in Opelika where her mother has owned a salon and a dance school. She studied at Auburn University, moved to New York City where she financed her education at the Fashion Institute with her beauty contest winnings. Hagan was Miss New York and then won the Miss America contest in 2013. She lived in California briefly and then moved back to Opelika where she worked as a television news reporter in Columbus, before leaving journalism to pursue a seat in Congress.

Hagan is challenging incumbent Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Saks). Rogers is seeking his ninth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. This is the closest watched of the six congressional races on Tuesday. Congressmen Ruben Gallegos (D-Arizona) and Eric Swalwell (D-California) have both come to Alabama to campaign with Hagan.

The last time a Democrat has won the Third Congressional District of Alabama was then incumbent Glen Browder (D) in 1994. Democrats are hoping that a “blue wave” of progressive voters will come to the polls on Tuesday and sweep conservative Republicans like Rogers out of office. Longshot gubernatorial candidate, Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter “Walt” Maddox (D), said recently that he could win if there was really high turnout of Democrats.
