A new analysis by Wallethub determined that Alabama is the 19th most patriotic state in the nation, according to the author’s metrics.

To determine where Americans have the most red, white and blue pride, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 13 key indicators of patriotism. The data set ranges from an average number of military enlistees to share of adults who voted in the 2016 presidential election to AmeriCorps volunteers per capita.

Alabama was fifth in the country in the average number of military enlistees per 1,000 civilian adults.

The state was 30th in the number of active-duty military personnel per 100,000 civilian adults.

Alabama finished 17th in the number of veterans per 1,000 civilian adults.

The most patriotic state in the country, according to Wallethub, is New Hampshire. They are followed by Wyoming, Vermont, Utah, Idaho, Wisconsin and Alaska. South Carolina is the most patriotic of the Southern states, and they are number eight. Missouri and Minnesota round out the top 10.

The least patriotic state is New Jersey. Texas is 46th, West Virginia is 47th, California is 48th and New York is 49th.
To determine the most patriotic states, WalletHub compared the 50 states across two key dimensions, “military engagement” and “civic engagement.”

The authors evaluated those dimensions using 13 relevant metrics with different weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the highest level of patriotism. Weighted averages across all metrics were calculated for its overall score and then the researches used the resulting scores to rank-order the sample.
