Byrne applauds FAA grants for two South Alabama airports

Congressman Bradley Byrne, R-Montrose, released a statement Tuesday applauding FAA’s announcement of grants to two Southwest Alabama airports.

“Airports are a valuable component of our transportation infrastructure and an important economic development tool,” Byrne said. “With the improvements made possible by these grants in Foley and Mobile, our district’s infrastructure network will become stronger. I thank Secretary Chao and the Department of Transportation for their commitment to these facilities, and I look forward to partnering with them in the future as we seek opportunities to improve infrastructure in Southwest Alabama.”

Foley Municipal Airport will receive $305,000 to repave 1,450 feet of the existing hangar access taxiway.

The Mobile Airport Authority will receive two grants for the Mobile Downtown Airport — $822,207 will be used to acquire a sweeper truck for cleaning airfield debris, and $1,350,000 will be used to update the existing airport master plan study to show current and future needs of the airport.

Baldwin County is the fastest growing county in Alabama.

Earlier this month, U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Alabama, announced that 20 local airports throughout Alabama would receive more than $25.9 million in Federal Aviation Administration grants.

“The FAA grants awarded to these local airports across Alabama support key projects that aim to improve safety, security and efficiency,” Shelby said. “Airport infrastructure impacts overall economic success, and as a result of this funding, 20 of Alabama’s airports will receive the upgrades and advances needed to continue serving communities and driving development.”
