State Department of Veterans Affairs revamps website

It’s easier to navigate the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs website thanks to an overhaul of the department’s website, which went live last week.

Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Kent Davis said Monday that the redesigned website is still a work in progress, and plans call for much more content to be added, but that the feedback has been positive.

“We hope to get streaming videos on it, and put a lot of forms on there for veterans, but it’s a  good start,” Davis said. “A lot of good comments so far.”

The newly redesigned website includes integrated social media buttons, which the department hopes will improve communication with veterans and provides easier access to resources.

The new site also merged both the state DVA website and the website for Alabama Veterans Network, a state-run site that links veterans with resources based on proximity to their homes.

“It is one-stop shopping now,” Davis said.

The state DVA paid about $14,000 to revamp the website, but Davis said he expects the work will quickly pay for itself.

The new website uses the content management system WordPress, which is much easier and less costly for department staff to use, Davis said. To upload data onto the old site, the department had to contract the work out to the Alabama Office of Information Technology.

“We’re training our staff as we speak to edit the website,” Davis said.
