A spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Corrections confirmed on Thursday that an incarcerated man died at St. Clair Correctional Facility on Monday.
In a statement provided to APR on Thursday, the spokesperson identified Kishon Green, a 44-year-old incarcerated man at the facility, as the deceased individual.
During security checks inside the St. Clair County facility on Monday, Green was discovered unresponsive in his cell. Medical staff attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful, and Green was pronounced dead later that same day, according to the spokesperson.
A source within the Alabama corrections system with knowledge of the incident involving Green said that his death was a suicide. This has yet to be confirmed by the ADOC; the agency says it does not comment on active investigations.
The ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division is investigating the circumstances of Green’s death, with an official cause of death pending the results of an autopsy.
On Oct. 22, another individual died at the St. Clair County facility, which — including Green’s death — marks at least the sixth such death since September.
The ADOC later confirmed that Jason Wade Means, a 42-year-old incarcerated man, was the individual who died.
Two days prior to Means’ death, attorneys and investigators with the U.S. Justice Department visited the facility as part of their discovery process for the ongoing federal lawsuit with the state and the ADOC.
The ADOC confirmed to APR on Thursday that the DOJ recently visited Donaldson Correctional Facility for the same purpose of discovery but did not give a specific date for their visit.
Sources within the Alabama correctional system told APR on Tuesday that the DOJ visited on Monday of this week, the same day that a 32-year-old man at the Jefferson County facility, Kenneth Earl Ray II, was pronounced dead after being stabbed by another incarcerated individual, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
