An incarcerated individual is confirmed to have died on Wednesday at Donaldson Correctional Facility, according to a statement from the Jefferson County Corner’s Office.
Tycia Leon Marshall, a 41-year-old incarcerated man at the Jefferson County facility, was found unresponsive by correctional staff on Wednesday morning in one of the dorms at the facility. The department has not released further information regarding the circumstances surrounding Marshall’s death or what correctional staff did following the discovery of him unresponsive in the dorm.
The Alabama Department of Corrections has yet to respond to a request for information regarding the case.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s office will perform an autopsy on Marshall today to determine a cause and manner of death, according to the statement, with his death under investigation by the Law Enforcement Services Division of the ADOC.
Last week, at least nine individuals died within the Alabama prison system, accounting for one of the largest losses of life among Alabama’s incarcerated population this year. The number of dead is likely an undercount, according to sources within the Alabama prison system with knowledge of the recent deaths, with at least two individuals dying on Thanksgiving.
The names of the deceased include Justin W. Hopkins, 39; Willie A. McCall, 67; Cameron Holifield, 22; Grady Anthony Lee Jr, 44; Barry Christopher Culver, 25; Albert Jackson Sorrells, 57; Jimmy R. Hurst, 89; Jason P. Hopkins, 36; and Joseph Edward Nichols, 46.
Also last week, the Law Enforcement Services Division of the ADOC arrested and charged Deaundra Johnson, a 43-year-old corrections captain at Childersburg Community Work Center in Talladega County, and Centauria Olds, a 37-year-old former corrections lieutenant, with multiple counts of bribery and corruption.
Olds had previously been charged with corruption and violation of law enforcement conduct in 2020 for bringing contraband into an unspecified ADOC facility.
