On Wednesday, Gov. Kay Ivey announced the timeframe and date for Jamie Mills to be executed by the state.
Mills will have to be executed within a 30-hour time frame. This 30-hour limit will begin at midnight on Thursday, May 30, and last until 6 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024.
Mills was sentenced to death in 2007 after being convicted for the 2004 double homicide of Floyd and Vera Hill. Mills will be the second individual to be executed this year if it is not botched, and unlike the previous individual killed by the state, Mills will be given a lethal injection.
Alabama Department of Corrections commissioner Jon Hamm is the individual tasked with carrying out the execution. On March 20, the Alabama Supreme Court issued an order authorizing Hamm and Ivey to fulfill Mills’ death sentence.
“The Supreme Court of Alabama has entered an order authorizing you to carry out inmate Jamie Mills sentence of death for the capital murders of Floyd and Vera Hill,” Ivey said in a letter to Hamm. “According to the Supreme Court’s order, the execution must oceur within a time frame to be set by the governor to begin not less than 30 days from March 20, 2024, the date of the order. Accordingly, I hereby set a thirty-hour time frame for the execution to occur beginning at 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2024, and expiring at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024.”
Kenneth Eugene Smith was executed on Jan. 25 using nitrogen hypoxia, a previously untested method. Despite national and international scrutiny, Smith’s execution was hailed as a success by Ivey and the Attorney General’s Office.
