Vestavia Hills hosts annual “Salute to Veterans” celebration

Mayor Ashley Curry will host a patriotic program with Commissioner Jeff Newton to recognize veterans who served our country.

Today, Vestavia Hills will host its annual “Salute to Veterans” event at the Vestavia Hills Civic Center in honor of Veterans Day. 

Festivities are set to begin at 12 p.m. with a Veterans Day-themed luncheon for seniors, followed by a “Health & Resources Fair” where veterans and their families can find helpful information, services and support from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The event will also feature a “moving patriotic program honoring veterans” hosted by Vestavia Hills Mayor Ashley Curry at 2 p.m. Commissioner Jeff Newton of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs is also set to speak at the program.

“We want to recognize all of our veterans and show our appreciation for their service to our country,” Mayor Curry said in a written statement provided to APR. “We estimate that we have at least 1,000 residents of Vestavia Hills that served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, or the Gulf Wars.” 

“I always remember a quote from President Ronald Reagan in which he challenges all of us to never forget the sacrifice these men and women made,” Curry added. “‘Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.'”

City officials are welcoming anyone who wishes to celebrate the community’s veterans to attend the event: “Whether you’re a veteran, a family member, or simply someone who wants to show support and appreciation, this is a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate those who have served our country.” 

Right at Home In Home Care & Assistance, Affinity Hospice, Baptist Health Medical Group, Galleria Woods retirement community, Vestavia Hills High School, Vestavia Hills Arts Council, Dixie Division Military Vehicle Club and Town Village Vestavia Hills are among the event’s sponsors.
