The Alabama Department of Transportation announced Thursday more than $3.1 million in grants for 12 regional and municipal airports across the state.
The grants are part of ALDOT’s Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program, which provides financial assistance and technical support to public-use airports.
With the latest awards, ALDOT has distributed $5,336,018 through the program since the beginning of 2026.
Local airports also received Federal Aviation Administration funding. The ALDOT and FAA grants, combined with local funding, represent an overall investment of more than $7.2 million in the 12 facilities.
“Safe, reliable airport facilities require continued investment,” ALDOT Aeronautics Bureau Chief Frank Farmer said. “These grants will help local airports address important needs and maintain facilities that pilots, businesses and communities can depend on.”
The airports receiving funding are Albertville Regional Airport, Camden Municipal Airport, Cullman Regional Airport-Folsom Field, Dothan Regional Airport, Fayette Municipal Airport, Florala Municipal Airport, Gulf Shores International Airport/Jack Edwards Field, Isbell Field, Lanett Regional Airport, Pryor Field Regional Airport, South Alabama Regional Airport and Wetumpka Municipal Airport.
“These grants reflect ALDOT’s continued investment in the state’s air transportation system, which supports emergency response, commerce, tourism and more,” the department said.
The funding will support projects including runway rehabilitation, lighting and path indicator improvements, taxi lane construction and hangar construction and improvements.
Gulf Shores International Airport/Jack Edwards Field received the largest award, with $2.5 million in ALDOT funding.
Wetumpka Municipal Airport received the second-largest amount of ALDOT funding. The airport received a combined $781,646 from ALDOT and the city of Wetumpka for hangar construction and a combined $381,978 in FAA, city and ALDOT funding for taxi lane construction.
Projects eligible for Airport Improvement Funding Program grants include land acquisition, runway upgrades, facility repairs, maintenance and operational improvements.
ALDOT said planning for fiscal year 2027 Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program grants is underway.
