In line with the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the Alabama Republican Party held a super-sized summer dinner that featured not only U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, but also U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, former Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl, youth intitiative leader Brilyn Hollyhand and visiting Republican congressmembers from other states.
Tuberville promised to come in as Alabama’s next governor with a plan that he said he has been working on now for 18 months.
“I got a different plan than anybody’s ever had,” Tuberville said. “It’s going to be totally different.”
He did not elaborate on any details of that plan in his speech, pivoting instead to his strong relationship with President Donald Trump and speculating who might follow him up—most likely J.D. Vance, Tuberville positioned, although Marco Rubio is another option, he said.
The speech then turned to the country’s debt, which he claimed Trump has cut down despite Trump adding nearly $8 trillion in debt in his first term and an estimated $2 trillion or more so far in his second term.
Tuberville started his speech with a joke of sorts, announcing to the crowd that he had just seen Dr. Anthony Fauci being arrested by the FBI, met with both laughs and cheers by the crowd of more than 1,200 Republicans gathered for the dinner. Tuberville recently made headlines for promising to try and have Fauci criminally tried in Alabama and sent to prison for his role in the Covid-19 pandemic.
Pearl, who considered running for Senate before ultimately deciding against it, spoke primarily about his outspoken support for Israel and America’s continued alliance with the country.
“Let me ask you. question: which ally in the world could we least afford to lose when it comes to shared intelligence,” Pearl said. “When it comes to military innovation?”
Britt pitched that Democrats are becoming increasingly socialist and claimed that they “actually hate America.”
“This November, we are fighting for the soul of our nation,” Britt said. “We need every single one of you to step up and answer the call. We’ve got to make sure Coach Tuberville has the biggest vote in the history of this state.”
U.S. Rep. Brandon Gil of Texas repeated falsehoods about daycares in Minnesota receiving government assistance despite having no children. His claim specifically mentioned daycare centers targeted in a video that Minnesota officials later debunked. There is, however, a major fraud scandal involving Minnesota daycares that has been under investigation for years, headed by a white woman and involving numerous Somali individuals.
Gil also made a joke about U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, who he said cursed him out about a bill after he tweeted that the country would be better off if she were deported.
“All I could think was, do you kiss your brother with that mouth,” Gil said, referring to an unfounded conspiracy that Omar pretended to be married to her brother in order to gain him U.S. citizenship status.
