Figures announces $8.5 million for Montgomery airport runway upgrades

The federal grant will refurbish more than 9,000 feet of Montgomery Regional Airport runway, seeking to reduce debris and support regional growth.

Shomari Figures

U.S. Representative Shomari Figures, D-Alabama, announced Sunday that more than $8.5 million in federal funding has been awarded for renovations and improvements at Montgomery Regional Airport.

The $8,506,686 in federal funds, awarded through a U.S. Department of Transportation grant, will go toward rehabilitating more than 9,000 feet of existing runway to enhance structural integrity, minimize debris and extend the runway’s useful life.

“I’m thrilled to see our community receive significant federal support and investment with over $8.5 million in federal funding,” Figures said. “The Montgomery Regional Airport is essential to our local, state and regional economy, and this funding will help to make necessary infrastructure updates to improve conditions at the airport and ensure its long-term viability.”

In a January letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Figures argued that improvements to the airport were necessary to ensure the capital region airport can meet current air travel needs and prepare for continued growth.

“As the commercial service airport serving Alabama’s capital region, MGM plays a vital economic role in enabling safe, reliable air service; supporting military and government travel; and driving economic development across Montgomery County and the Second Congressional District,” Figures wrote to the Department of Transportation.

“The proposed project will strengthen core airport infrastructure while enhancing safety and operational efficiency,” Figures added. “These improvements are essential to ensuring the airport can meet current needs, maintain compliance with federal standards, and support continued growth in passenger travel and business activity.”

Figures further argued that Montgomery is an “expanding hub” for advanced manufacturing, logistics, education and public-sector activities, thereby justifying federal investment in improvements to the local airport.

“A modern, safe, and resilient airport is a strategic asset that supports local employers, strengthens supply chains, and improves access for residents and visitors,” Figures wrote. “This project will deliver meaningful benefits to the traveling public while reinforcing the long-term competitiveness of the region.”
