St. Clair County will replace a 91-year-old bridge with help from federal funding secured by U.S. Senator Katie Britt, R-Alabama.

Britt announced in a recent press release that the St. Clair County Commission will receive $1.02 million through the fiscal year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Act. The money will help replace the Depot Street Bridge in Riverside, built in 1935.

“I’m proud to secure over $1 million for St. Clair County Commission to replace a heavily traveled bridge that serves commuters and families every day,” Britt said. “St. Clair County has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, and it’s critical that our infrastructure matches that growth, providing residents with safe and reliable routes throughout the county.”

“As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I am grateful for the opportunity to secure funding for projects that will make a difference in the lives of Alabamians,” she added.

More than 1,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily. Local officials say the bridge lacks a true guardrail system and needs to be replaced to ensure commuters’ safety as residential development increases in the area.

“On behalf of the St. Clair County Commission and the citizens we serve, I want to thank Senator Katie Britt for securing $1.02 million in federal funding for the replacement of the Depot Street Bridge,” St. Clair County Commission Chairman Stan Bateman said. “As residential development in this area continues to increase, this roadway is carrying more traffic, including school buses traveling across the bridge every day. Replacing the bridge is an important investment in the safety, reliability, and future growth of our community. We are grateful for Senator Britt’s leadership, her continued support of St. Clair County, and her commitment to addressing the infrastructure needs of Alabama’s growing communities.”

St. Clair County Engineer Clay Phillips said construction will not begin until fiscal year 2027 or 2028 as the county road department works to complete a bypass along Sugar Farm Road in Riverside.
