Ivey urges Congress to pass tax reform

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced she has joined fellow Republican governors in sending a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., urging Congress to pass tax reform legislation.

“President Trump is proposing the largest tax cut for American families and businesses in decades,” Ivey said. “The current tax structure is oppressive to families and businesses alike, and it simply sets us up for failure in today’s global economy. We’ve proven in Alabama, with the lowest unemployment rate in history, lower taxes and less government regulation produces jobs – it’s time Washington joins us in our efforts.”

Moore promises to support any cut to the federal income, corporate tax rates

U.S. Senate Candidate Judge Roy Moore announced that he supports President Donald Trump’s effort to pass the largest tax reform package since 1986.

“As your next United States Senator, I will support any cut to the federal income tax on individuals and on corporations,” Moore said. “The federal government has grown too large and we have given bureaucrats and politicians too much power over our economy and our small businesses.”

Sewell critical of GOP tax reform effort

U.S. Rep. Terri A. Sewell, D-Selma, was sharply critical of the Republican tax reform package in a recent email to constituents.

“This month, Congress is considering passage of a tax bill that cuts taxes for special interests and the wealthy while eliminating provisions that middle-class families rely on to afford medical expenses, education, their mortgage, and more,” Sewell said. “I fought to fix the tax bill when it came before the Ways and Means Committee, and now I’m fighting to fix it before it passes Congress.”

Democrats claim GOP Tax Plan would hurt Alabama workers, communities

Thursday, the Alabama Democratic Party released a statement critical of the recently released House GOP tax plan that passed the U.S. House of Representatives earlier that day.

“House Republicans voted today to increase taxes on middle class families and provide massive giveaways to billionaires and wealthy corporations. While Senate Republicans debate their tax plan in committee, the latest edition calls for permanent tax breaks for the richest, paid for by cutting health care and other programs Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and education that working Alabama families rely on every day,” the Alabama Democratic Party wrote.

US House Passes the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

Thursday, November 16, 2017 the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act by a vote of 227 to 205.  The Tax Cut and Jobs Act is the first major overhaul of our nation’s tax code since 1986.

Congressman Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) released a statement after voting in favor of the bill.

“My colleagues and I took a significant step towards providing American families much needed and meaningful tax relief,” said Palmer. “The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act lowers rates for individuals and families and makes much needed changes designed to spur the type of sustained economic growth that will benefit every American. Thursday, the U.S. House Republican caucus unveiled The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which they claim will fundamentally reform the tax code for the first time since 1986.

Thursday, November 2, 2017, the Republican leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives introduced their new tax reform plan unveiled The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which they claim will fundamentally reform the tax code for the first time since 1986.  U.S. Rep. Terri A. Sewell, D-Selma, said that the new plan is a, “Raw deal for Alabama.”

“After months of secret negotiations, it should come as no surprise that the tax plan revealed by Republican leaders today is a raw deal for Alabama and for working families,” Sewell said on social media. “The Republican tax bill will raise costs on families who can least afford it while providing wealthy individuals and special interests a windfall in tax breaks.”

Roby supports plan to expand the Child Tax Credit

Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Martha Roby, R-Montgomery, joined Ivanka Trump and leaders from the House and Senate to promote a plan to expand the child tax credit to help working families.

“Expanding the child tax credit is the right thing to do,” Roby said at a news conference promoting the proposal. “For the people I represent, this can make a big difference. US House passes Budget

Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Senate amendment to the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Resolution, which contains the framework for the joint House, Senate, and White House tax reform plan.
