Qualifying Begins for House District 67 Seat

Tuesday, November 8, 2016, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley (R) announced the timeline for a special election to fill the vacant District 67 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives. The District 67 House seat was previously held by Representative Darrio Melton (D-Selma) who was recently elected as the Mayor of Selma.

The Special Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. If a Special Primary Election is not necessary, because the major parties each have only one candidate, the Special General Election shall be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

If no candidate in the primary receives 50 percent of the primary vote plus one then a Special Primary Runoff Election will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

If there is a Special Primary Runoff Election then the Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, June 27, 2017.

The last day for major party candidates to qualify with their respective parties will be Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. The two major political parties shall certify their qualified candidates to the Secretary of State’s office as soon as possible after the qualification deadline but by no later than 5:00 pm on November 29, 2016.

All Independent candidates and/or minor parties seeking ballot access have until Tuesday, January 31, 2017 to file the appropriate notification, petitions, or supporting paperwork with the Secretary of State’s office by Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 5:00 pm.

The Alabama Democratic Party has opened qualifying for the Special Primary Election to fill the vacant House District 67 seat.

Any interested registered voter in HD 67 may call the Alabama Democratic Party office at (334) 262-2221 to get qualifying forms. An interested person may also print a qualifying form, located on the Democratic Party’s website aldemocrats.org.

The qualifying fee is $558.26, half the usual Legislative qualifying fee because the eventual winner will serve half the term. The eventual winner will still have to face reelection with the rest of the legislature in 2018.

Alabama Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy Worley is encouraging interested Democrats to respond quickly. All qualifying papers, along with the fee, must be received in the State Party Office, by Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at 5:00 PM. A candidate may hand deliver his qualifying forms to the Alabama Democratic Party Office, 501 Adams Ave, Montgomery, AL 36104, or he/she may mail the form to the Alabama Democratic Party, P.O. Box 950, Montgomery, AL 36101.

Chairwoman Worley said in a statement, “Democrats in Dallas and Perry Counties have an excellent opportunity to fill this vacant seat.” Chairwoman Worley emphasized the importance of any candidate’s willingness to work hard and represent House District 67 with integrity and accountability.”

The Alabama Republican Party will open candidate qualifying for Alabama House of Representatives District 67 on Monday, November 14 at 8:30 a.m. and will close on Tuesday, November 29 at 5:00 p.m..

HD 67 is a majority/minority district and tends to lean Democratic.
