With the upcoming midterm elections now only eight days away, Republicans are expected to gain control of the U.S. House of Representatives, according to a recent nationwide poll of likely voters released on Sunday.

According to the most recent update from the CBS News Battleground Tracker poll, the GOP is expected to gain the majority with 15 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, swelling from 213 seats to 228.

CBS predicts that if minority and young voters appear at levels comparable to the previous U.S. Midterm election in 2018, where the federal trifecta under the Republicans was ended by a 41-seat gain in the U.S. House by the Democrats, then the balance of power between the parties in the country’s lower chamber would be in flux until tighter races are called later into November.

In that scenario, the Democratic majority could be held with as little as a single seat and reduced from 222 to 2018, according to the poll.

A recent The New York Times and Siena College poll among likely voters in tight U.S. Senate races in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania found Democratic candidates in three of the four races held single-digit leads over their Republican opponents.

The same poll released on Monday found that a majority of likely voters want Republican control of the Senate but prefer the Democratic candidate running for Senate in their respective state.
