The Food Bank of North Alabama announced Wednesday it received a $100,000 donation from Publix Super Markets Charities to assist with transportation associated with the Food Bank’s mobile pantry program and other direct services in North Alabama.
The Food Bank has seen a 48 percent increase in the need for food assistance in just Madison County since October 2023, and a 28 percent increase in the rest of its 11-county coverage area that spans from Florence to Cullman to Ft. Payne. The Food Bank of North Alabama is on pace to distribute 15 million pounds of food – equivalent to 12.5 million meals – in its 2024 fiscal year, a record for the non-profit organization. Publix Charities’ donation will help increase capacity and meet this elevated need.
Publix Charities has given a total of $525,000 to the Food Bank of North Alabama since 2021.
“We are so grateful to Publix Charities for their donation,” said Shirley Schofield, CEO of the Food Bank of North Alabama. “For 40 years we have served the community and support like this help the Food Bank acquire the resources to ensure people have enough nutritious food. This investment will impact children, veterans, seniors and working families for generations.”
The $100,000 donation from Publix Super Markets Charities to The Food Bank of North Alabama is one of several donations made this year to help provide food and other essential support to people facing hunger. In all, Publix Super Markets Charities has donated $11 million to Feeding America partner food banks and other nonprofit partners in 2024.
