Farmers Federation endorses Rep. Matt Woods for Senate District 5

The special election for the District 5 seat will be held on March 11.

Republican Matt Woods

The Alabama Farmers Federation has officially endorsed State Rep. Matt Woods for Alabama Senate District 5, a seat previously held by former Senate Pro Tem Greg Reed. Reed is stepping down from the Senate to take a position in Gov. Kay Ivey’s administration. District 5 includes Fayette, Lamar, and Walker Counties, as well as portions of Jefferson and Tuscaloosa Counties.

Woods, a Republican representing Walker County in the House of Representatives for the past two years, has made a name for himself by championing conservative causes. His legislative efforts include authoring the Alabama Child Protection Act, supporting the reduction of sales tax on groceries, and co-sponsoring the elimination of income taxes on overtime pay.

The Farmers Federation’s endorsement highlighted Woods’ deep ties to the community and his alignment with the organization’s values.

“I’m excited Matt Woods is running as are the farmers of this county,” said Dorman Grace, Walker County Farmers Federation president. “Matt Woods is one of us – a conservative businessman who has represented us well in the House of Representatives, and we know he will do the same thing in the Senate.”

Woods, a second-generation business owner, owns Jasper Auto Sales and previously served as chairman of the Walker County Chamber of Commerce. In 2017, he was appointed by Gov. Ivey to the Alabama Community College System Board of Directors.

The Farmers Federation’s endorsement also highlighted Woods’ character and community involvement. After the tragic loss of their first child, Woods and his wife, Brandi, founded the Hope After Loss (H.A.L.O.) non-profit organization to provide support groups and resources for families who have experienced similar grief. The couple has one daughter.

“I am honored to be endorsed by the Farmers Federation,” said Woods. “We share the same work ethic and the same conservative values. I look forward to representing them and all the people of District 5 in the Alabama Senate.”
