State Auditor Andrew Sorrell announced on Monday that he will be a Republican candidate for Secretary of State during the 2026 campaign cycle, “citing a desire to preserve honest elections and protect Alabama’s ballot box from manipulation,” his release stated.

“Alabama needs a committed conservative who will shield our elections from fraud while blocking illegal immigrants and other ineligible individuals from registering to vote,” Sorrell said. “As secretary of state, I will ensure that honestly cast votes are counted honestly, and those who attempt to cheat at the ballot box are caught and punished for their actions.”

Sorrell noted that the Constitution of 2022 and Code of Alabama assign more than 1,000 duties to the secretary of state, many of which involve providing services to businesses ranging from the largest employers to the smallest, mom-and-pop storefronts, and he pledged to fulfill all of those responsibilities in the quickest, most efficient, and most cost-effective manner for taxpayers.

“Elected state auditor in 2022, Sorrell has declined use of the state vehicle available to him as a constitutional officer, relocated the office’s staff, and left an administrative assistant position unfilled, all of which have combined to provide substantial six-figure savings to taxpayers,” the release shared.

He previously served a term in the Alabama House representing District 3 in Colbert County and was ranked as one of the most conservative legislators in Alabama, earning the “Conservative Policy Warrior” award from the Alabama Policy Institute in 2020, as well as a 100 rating on the American Conservative Union’s 2021 scorecard.

“I was DOGE before DOGE was cool,” Sorrell said. “Throughout my time in the Legislature, I consistently voted for smaller government and lower taxes, which sometimes resulted in a trip to the woodshed from the leadership and lobbyists, but I remained true to my deeply conservative beliefs and slept well at night.”

A serial entrepreneur, Sorrell started his first company at age 16 and currently owns four Alabama-based businesses, which employ about 20 people.

Trump's declining polls, along with Tuberville's potential polarizing run for governor, could give Alabama Dems a pathway back to relevancy.

Opinion

As we are currently not ranked 50th in every significant area measured, his election should guarantee that we achieve this downward goal.

Opinion

Alabama has a process for determining residency issues. Should he run for governor, Tuberville will go through it. And it won't be kind.

The feud came after Secretary Wes Allen said Alabama's voter file was "a bloated mess" when he took office.
