David L. Silverstein, a local businessman, attorney and longtime Mountain Brook resident, has officially announced his candidacy for the Mountain Brook City Council.
Silverstein, who founded the Birmingham-based real estate firm The FiveStone Group, says he brings decades of experience leading complex, high-stakes development projects across the Southeast.
“Mountain Brook has always been home to me and my family. We need leaders who understand how to solve problems, build consensus, and ensure that Mountain Brook remains a thriving and forward-looking community—one that honors its history while preparing wisely for the future” Silverstein said.
Silverstein says he is running to offer Mountain Brook thoughtful, strategic leadership grounded in collaboration and results, Silverstein’s release shared.
“As a member of the City Council, I’m committed to supporting our excellent school system. Our Board of Education does an outstanding job and our Superintendent, Dicky Barlow, was rightly recognized as Alabama’s Superintendent of the Year in 2023,” Silverstein said. “I’m proud to stand with our first responders and will work to ensure they have the best resources, training, and support they need to continue keeping our community safe.”
Along with enhancing and expanding the sidewalk trail in the city, an additional priority of Silverstein includes advancing plans for a pedestrian bridge safely linking Mountain Brook and Homewood across Hollywood Boulevard over Highway 280.
Silverstein spent over two decades as a principal at Bayer Properties, where he says he played a leading role in landmark projects like Cahaba Village, which provides the City of Mountain Brook approximately $1.6M in annual sales tax revenue, representing over 10 percent of overall annual sales tax revenue for the city.
Silverstein also says he is deeply involved in civic life, having served on the local boards of the American Heart Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He currently serves on the boards of the Alabama Holocaust Education Center and Leadership Alabama, and is a member of the UAB St. Vincent’s Advisory Board.
Silverstein and his wife, Susan, have five children and fourteen grandchildren—eleven of whom are either current or future students in Mountain Brook Schools.
The election will be held on August 26.
