Voters in parts of Cullman County went to the polls Tuesday for the Special Republican Primary in Alabama House District 12, with unofficial results pointing to an upcoming runoff between Cindy Myrex and Clint Hollingsworth.
Myrex led the field with 2,090 votes (49.81 percent), narrowly missing the majority needed to win outright. Hollingsworth followed with 1,848 votes (43.24 percent). Heather Doyle and Dan McWhorter received just 150 votes (3.51 percent) and 147 votes (3.44 percent), respectively.
With provisional ballots still to be counted on Tuesday, July 22, Myrex remains just below the 50 percent threshold. If the results hold, the top two vote-getters will face off in a Special Republican Runoff Election scheduled for August 12.
The seat became vacant earlier this year when Rep. Corey Harbison resigned from the Alabama House of Representatives, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.
In a statement following the vote, Alabama Republican Party Director of Legislative Affairs and Communications Jeannie Burniston thanked the candidates for their participation and reaffirmed the GOP’s focus on holding the seat.
“We want to thank all the candidates for a well-run race and their dedication to public service. It is a significant sacrifice to serve, and we respect everyone who wishes to contribute to making our communities a better place.
“House District 12 is a solidly Republican seat—President Donald J. Trump won nearly 90 percent of the vote in Cullman County—and the Alabama Republican Party is committed to keeping it in conservative hands. We look forward to working with the eventual winner to protect our shared values.”
The winner of the runoff is widely expected to carry the district in the general election, as HD12 remains one of the GOP’s safest strongholds in the state.
