With just over a week left until the September 23 runoff election, Alabama State Representative and Mobile mayoral candidate Barbara Drummond has received yet another high-profile endorsement, this time from U.S. Senator Cory Booker, D-New Jersey.

In his endorsement announcement video, posted to Drummond’s Facebook page, Booker touted the state representative’s legislative record on gun violence and economic investment, as well as her experience at all levels of state government.

“Hi, I’m Cory Booker and I’m proud to endorse Barbara Drummond for Mayor of Mobile,” Booker stated. “She’s taken on gun violence by sponsoring bills for responsible firearm storage and tougher penalties for those that are involved in reckless, dangerous, shootings. But she’s also prioritized addressing root causes, securing state funding for career and technical educational programs in Mobile’s high schools.”

“She really is about preparing for the future, and when it comes to the economy she doesn’t just talk about a fair economy, she passed the law requiring the state to track and report its spending with women- and minority-owned businesses. Her team has led recruitment for Airbus, and she champions workforce development at Bishop State,” Booker continued. “She is the only candidate with real executive experience at the city, county, and state levels from managing multi-million-dollar budgets, to passing laws in Montgomery. She has proven 360-degree understanding of how to get things done for Mobile.”

“So, please join me in supporting Barbara Drummond for Mayor. Extraordinary leadership for the people,” the senator concluded.

Drummond thanked Booker for his endorsement in her own statement.

“I am grateful to have the endorsement of Senator Cory Booker, a former Mayor himself,” said Drummond. “Senator Booker understands what it takes to get things done in city government. I look forward to not only keeping Mobile’s progress going, but taking our city to the next level — for ALL of us.”

In addition to Booker, Drummond has also received key endorsements from Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, SPLC Action Fund, Southwest Alabama Labor Council, AFL‑CIO, Communications Workers of America Local 3907, Democratic Mayors Association, former U.S. Senator Doug Jones and former candidates for Mayor of Mobile Lawrence Battiste and Jermaine Burrell.

Meanwhile, Drummond’s opponent, former District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis, has been endorsed by outgoing Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson.

Since finishing first in August’s general election, Drummond’s campaign has continued to focus on generating grassroots support—even while being out-fundraised by Cheriogotis, mobilizing voters through door-knocking, calling, and texting ahead of the runoff.
