Governor Kay Ivey and Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries, ADAI, Commissioner Rick Pate officially proclaimed October 12 as Farmers’ Day in Alabama during a ceremony at Sweet Creek Farm Market in Pike Road, Ala. on Thursday. The proclamation highlighted an essential role that Alabama’s farmers play in sustaining families, contributing $77.3 billion annually to the state’s economy.

Sweet Creek owner and Alabama Representative Reed Ingram and Blue Ribbon Dairy Owner Michaela Sanders-Wilson joined the event and shared about the sacrifices farmers make to feed and clothe the world every day. Local farmers, elected officials and community members attended the celebration to support Alabama’s dedicated farmers.

“Alabama farmers are the backbone of our communities. They work tirelessly to put food on our tables, clothes on our backs and keep our rural economies strong,” said Commissioner Rick Pate. “Farmers’ Day and our Thank A Farmer initiative are about more than just recognition; they are about instilling a deeper appreciation for the farmers and ranchers whose hard work sustains us all.”

Gov. Ivey’s office said her proclamation served as a call to action for all Alabamians to pause and recognize the sacrifices, dedication and resilience of the state’s farming families.

The announcement also shined a spotlight on ADAI’s Thank A Farmer initiative, which Commissioner Pate launched in January 2025. The initiative emphasizes the daily impact of farming on the lives of every Alabamian.

“Farmers and rancher’s sacrifices do not always make the headlines, but it sits on every dinner table. Through inclement weather, disease outbreaks, endless hours and many times poor returns for their investments, they carry the burden of feeding our great nation. These efforts too often go unrecognized and undercompensated, which is why it’s our honor to advocate on their behalf,” Ivey’s release shared.

Alabama ranks among the top producers of freshwater fish, poultry, peanuts and pecans, while also placing in the top ten nationally for cotton production.

“Show your appreciation by choosing to purchase nutritious local meat, fruits and vegetables,” the release said.
