The Alabama Department of Corrections, ADOC, was recently recognized for its new Use of Force Policies and Review Procedures at JAILCON25, a legal-based corrections training conference held annually in three different regions of the United States.

The Southern Region conference was held in Mobile on October 13-15.

The ADOC won the Detention Facility Innovation Award, which recognizes detention facilities that have demonstrated exceptional achievement in developing and/or enhancing a particular aspect or feature in their facility or in the operations of the facility.

In 2024, the ADOC completely overhauled its Use of Force Policies and Review Procedures, replacing old polices with new legal-based language consistent with what is legally required to justify Use of Force. In addition, the ADOC established a Use of Force Review Board to review Use of Force investigations. According to the ADOC, these changes have helped create a safer environment for inmates and staff.

JAILCON is presented by the National Institute for Jail Operations, which offers vital services to assist corrections professionals in enhancing safety and security, proactively defending against litigation, and setting the standard for excellence in correctional operations. The conference features inspiring keynote speakers, 20+  hours of legal-based training taught by corrections experts, morale-boosting corrections appreciation events, exhibitors showcasing the newest products and services in corrections, and the inspiring awards ceremony recognizing dedicated professionals in the field of corrections.
