Community advocate and nonprofit leader Keith O. Williams officially announced his candidacy Wednesday for the Alabama House of Representatives, District 55, a district that includes neighborhoods across Birmingham, central Fairfield, Westfield, McDonald Chapel, Eastern Minor and surrounding communities.

Williams, a service leader with Great I Am Ministries Outreach International, entered the race with a message centered on “the rising cost of living, healthcare access, utility costs and public safety.”

“On the eve of Thanksgiving, a season of gratitude and reflection, I’m stepping forward because service to our community is not seasonal — it’s a daily commitment,” Williams said. “I’m running because families in District 55 deserve leadership that shows up not only for events and celebrations, but for the hard conversations and the tough issues shaping our lives.”

Williams outlined key priorities for his campaign, including:

  • Expanding Medicaid to increase healthcare access and help stabilize Alabama’s rural and urban hospitals
  • Eliminating the remaining state grocery tax without harming education funding
  • Establishing and funding the Alabama Public Transportation Trust Fund to improve mobility for workers, seniors, and students
  • Utility rate reform to ensure fair, transparent, and accountable energy pricing
  • Strengthening public safety partnerships and addressing root causes of crime
  • Supporting Fairfield’s economic revitalization with coordinated regional planning
  • Ensuring equity and resources across all neighborhoods in District 55

“People deserve a representative who will show up when it matters most,” Williams said. “District 55 needs someone who will speak boldly about affordability, healthcare, transportation, and economic opportunity — not just symbolic issues or talking points that never address what families are truly facing.”

Williams emphasized that his campaign is grounded in service, accountability, community engagement and transparency, reflecting his ACT framework: “Accountability and Action, Community Engagement and Common Ground, Transparency and Transformation.”

Williams also shared that the campaign will focus on direct voter engagement, community listening, service-based outreach, and building partnerships across organizations and neighborhoods.
